Pakistan considers Afghanistan its enemy since 1947. Soviet Union invades Pakistan’s enemy (Afghanistan) in 1979. Pakistan doesn’t thank the Soviets for the job but instead joins hands with Soviet Union’s archenemy US in driving Soviets out of Afghanistan. Totally makes sense!

I don’t know about you, but all persons of higher military background I know of had absolutely no clue about running a whole damn country. Sure, they were experts at warfare & strategy on the battlefield, however, that knowledge & experience doesn’t really help when the same guys try to manage a complex economy or deep rooted govt affairs.

Because it was still an Afghanistan. A communist/socialist Afghanistan that had been at odds with western leaning pakistan since it was created. And the soviets were definitely a threat to pakistan as well. Instead of zia had bhutto been there himself he wouldnt have hesitated in calling the Americans to kick them out. After the fall of the shah and the soviet invasion pakistan was on the frontlines against communists and the afghan mujahideen were a means to an end that we used effectively

Soviets posed no direct threat to Pakistan. In any case; it was much better working with them than US which only used Pakistan to win its Cold War against Soviet Union and left the country as used condom to suffer once the task was accomplished in 1989 (Fall of the Berlin Wall).

Yes totally working with soviets would solve all our problems.

As for posing direct threat to pakistan is concerned. Is that why kruschev threatened to nuke peshawar? Is that why the soviets supported the afghan king and all indian governments helping them millitary against pakistan?
