I hope the approach changes and the operation is sustained for some time and a real cost is imposed on them now so that they start to feel "deterred".

This is a strategic shift: When the topmost leaders of Afghanistan are getting targeted, then that means Pakistan is ready to change the leadership, and by extension the regime itself. Until yesterday, Pakistani attacks were not directly targeting the Afghan Taliban and their leadership--the targets were the TTP entities in Afghanistan.
BUT... while there is willingness to change the regime if needed, I don't see propping up of NRF or alternate Afghan Pashtun... yet.

What if, Trump decides that he got a deal with Iran and finds a new target ? As his military in the region and he'd want some sort of military action for his hardcore followers. Aerial action over AFG would mean, no retaliation and no risks to US forces too (which is not the case with Iran).

He wanted Bagram airbase too. Pak military won't mind US joining the party to hit Taliban.

Though China won't be happy US making a base once again in Afg.

Anyways its just a theory, chances of US joining war are very minimum.
