US lawmakers warn of Trump’s ‘incoherent’ Iran war strategy after classified briefing

WASHINGTON: United States lawmakers from both parties raised concerns on Tuesday about the strategy and potential consequences of the US-Israeli war against Iran following a classified congressional briefing.

Democratic Senator Chris Murphy said the Trump administration’s plans for the war appear “incoherent and incomplete” following the two-hour closed-door briefing.

“So they are going to spend hundreds of billions of your taxpayer dollars, get a whole bunch of Americans killed, and a hardline regime — probably a MORE anti-American hardline regime — will still be in charge,” Murphy said on X following the briefing.

Democrats warn of troop deployment

Other Democrats expressed similar concerns following the closed-door briefing by senior officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, about the joint attacks launched by the US and Israel on Iran on Feb 28.

Senator Richard Blumenthal said he left the briefing “dissatisfied and angry”, warning that the conflict could lead to the deployment of US ground troops in Iran.

“We seem to be on a path toward deploying American troops on the ground in Iran to accomplish any of the potential objectives,” Blumenthal told reporters.

Senator Elizabeth Warren questioned the financial burden of the war, saying the government appears willing to spend massive sums on the military campaign.

“The one part that seems clear is that while there is no money for 15 million Americans who lost their healthcare, there’s a billion dollars a day to spend on bombing Iran,” Warren said.

Republicans also raise concerns

Some Republicans have also voiced reservations about the war.

Senator Rand Paul said he doesn’t think there was an “imminent threat” of attack from Iran.

“We’re also told we’re going to free the oppressed people of Iran. I hope and wish for them to have freedom, but if our foreign policy is to free oppressed people, the wars would never end,” Paul said. “I’m going to continue to advocate for the Donald Trump who didn’t advocate for regime change.”

Representative Nancy Mace of South Carolina also warned against sending American troops into another Middle East conflict, saying she does “not want to send South Carolina’s sons and daughters into war with Iran”.

IDF: Michigan Synagogue Jihadi’s Brother Was Hezbollah Commander

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has confirmed that not only was the Michigan synagogue attacker’s brother in the Lebanese terror group Hezbollah, but that brother was actually a commander within the group.

Multiple people and outlets have cited the fact that several of Ayman Ghazali’s family members died in an Israeli counterstrike recently as some sort of excuse for why he tried to blow up a Jewish school and synagogue in West Bloomfield. Even the initial reports indicated that Ghazali’s family had terrorist ties, but the IDF has now defined the position of at least one of Ghazali’s brothers, making it obvious why he was the target for an Israeli military strike — and where Ayman’s views came from.

“INTELLIGENCE REVEALS: BROTHER OF TERRORIST BEHIND U.S. SYNAGOGUE ATTACK WAS A HEZBOLLAH TERRORIST” shouted the IDF X post headline on Sunday, March 15.

The IDF explained, “Hezbollah commander Ibrahim Muhammad Ghazali was responsible for managing weapons operations within a specialized branch of the Badr Unit. The unit is responsible for launching hundreds of rockets toward Israeli civilians throughout the war.” Some Israeli towns had the majority of their buildings damaged or destroyed.

The Ghazali family has spread a global net of terrorism, rather like the Iranian regime paymasters of Hezbollah on whose behalf Hezbollah has been aggressively bombarding Israeli civilians. Fortunately, Ayman didn’t succeed in killing anyone, only in getting himself killed, but goodness knows how many people’s deaths were on Ibrahim’s hands.

Ibrahim’s brother, the IDF concluded, “Ayman Muhammad Ghazali, carried out the terror attack in Michigan this past Thursday. Ibrahim was eliminated in an IAF [Israeli Air Force] strike on a Hezbollah military structure last week.”

Among the Islamist propagandists who tried to equate Israeli forces with Islamic terrorists and excuse Ghazali’s actions in the aftermath of the Temple Israel attack was Dearborn Heights Mayor Mo Baydoun, as Ghazali was a resident of Dearborn Heights at the time of the attack.

Baydoun said in his official statement on the attack, “Earlier this month, [Ghazali] lost several members of his own family, including his niece and nephew, in an Israeli attack on their home in Lebanon. Everyone deserves to worship in peace.” A good way to avoid dying in an Israeli counterstrike is not to be a murderous Islamic terrorist. Unlike Hezbollah, Israel does not target random civilians.

The mayor did not acknowledge that Ghazali had Hezbollah terror contacts in his phone (per The Federalist’s Benjamin Weingarten). Nor did he acknowledge what has now been confirmed: that the family members who died in the Israeli strike were targets precisely because of the Hezbollah affiliation. Baydoun did, however, pretend that there was just as much risk to Muslims as to Jews from terrorism, even though Islam is, without any competition, the ideology most responsible for terrorism in the world today, often specifically against Jews and Christians.

Baydoun assured Dearborn Heights residents that he would be looking out for them “during these sacred final days of Ramadan.” But like so many other Muslims around the world, including his brother the Hezbollah commander, Ghazali decided to turn Ramadan into the “month of Jihad.”

If this is true, then there is a whole new spin on things.

If it is fake news, it could get bad for you.

Been a lot of discussion of late of doing away with the filibuster in the US Senate. I won't go into a dissertation regarding the origins of the filibuster and why it exists. I will however post the link to this article which I think is quite eye opening. In today's day and age, given the make up of the Senate, the author is correct on a number of points IMO:

Wouldn't deploying troops require Congress approval ? I mean not that Trump cares but is it something he can do with his Presidential powers ? if so then what's the point of congress besides photo-ops and passing bills when President has power to use his executive power to bypass Congress anyways ? @AZ_HighCountry @j_hungary

The War Powers Act allows the President to deploy the US military in a time of emergency for up to 60 days (or 90 days, I forgot off the top of my head). There was a bill introduced last month to roll this back, but it was defeated on the Senate Floor.

Which means as long as it is within the time frame, the President can do what he wants to do with the military, over that, then he will need congressional approval, or was pre-approved by a prior AUMF by Congress.

What happens after the 90 Day period if Congress doesn't approve the oversea deployment but President insist off keeping the troops ? I mean we know impeachments do nothing as this president was impeached before, so Basically President has all the power to bomb/deploy US forces without Congress approvals and against the will of people, is it just me or it sound more like a Dictatorship?

It's 60 days.

Considering the US had troops in Afghanistan for 20 years and nearly that long in Iraq, I won't expect them to do much outside of complain because it is President Trump who is doing this and not someone else.

I remember Obama got a backlash for additional troops into Iraq/Afg, but question remains the same, if President can declare war, bomb and even deploy troops without civilian approval or congress than how is this a Democracy? doesn't it make it a one man show where he solely decided everything and he appoints his "yes" man who basically do nothing but say yes to every unhinged ideas of the President ? sounds more like a dictatorship to me with Elections with people holding little to no power.

It would help if you understood the War Powers Resolution of 1973.

The ONLY remedy for any resolution would be impeachment, but fat chance this is going to happen with the Republicans holding the Senate. Another way is to wait til your voice is heard in the election year.

This is going to blow back badly for him in mid-term, but in reality, nothing can be done until at least he is no longer the President. Either the Democrats retake the Senate with a supermajority, or at the end of his 4-year term.

Welcome to America, and this is why I left in the first place lol
