China is by far the world’s largest electricity consumer, reaching 10,573 TWh in 2025. This accounts for roughly one-third of global electricity demand, up sharply from less than 10% in the early 2000s.

China now consumes more electricity than the U.S., India, Russia, and Japan combined.

The surge in Chinese electricity use reflects rapid industrialization, urbanization, and the expansion of manufacturing sectors. As China continues to electrify its economy, its share of global demand is likely to remain dominant.

Canada and the U.S. Use the Most Electricity Per Person​

While China leads in total electricity demand, the ranking changes significantly when adjusted for population size.

Canada consumes 16.1 MWh per capita, followed by the U.S. at 13.1 MWh. Factors like larger homes, colder climates, and more energy-intensive lifestyles contribute to elevated consumption.

So why is a country that is the world’s third-largest electricity producer still facing an electricity crisis? Is it a power shortage, grid failure, or a deeper distribution problem?

More important is under Current global crisis India is still managing to provide electricity at the cheapest rates.... in mumbai also the hit is unbearable thanks to super El Nino and we are using AC since may beginning in all our 4 BHKs plus in common hall almost day and night except if everyone is out of home..... I was thinking that bill is going to explode like a bomb this month but I'm surprised to see it's still just 5498 rupees.... can this happen in any other south Asian country??

In mumbai there's no power cuts or load shading.... we experience power cuts just once in 1 or 2 years if there's some major technical glitch happenes... otherwise there's no electricity shortages in any metropolitan cities in India....

In mumbai there's no power cuts or load shading.... we experience power cuts just once in 1 or 2 years if there's some major technical glitch happenes... otherwise there's no electricity shortages in any metropolitan cities in India....
Why lying? Not only power cuts, but also severe water shortage, your "democratic government" is a total failed state.

So I myself stay in Dadar and I don't know when there was 9 hours power cut.... very funny.... maybe in Andheri and other areas but they are suburbs not main Mumbai island parts (matunga, Dadar are) and mostly they get power from Adani, Tata... whereas main Mumbai gets power from government BEST company...

And if that is true in other areas then maybe due to some technical glitch which happens once in a year or two...

Yes out of Mumbai island if you go then there's a weekly load shading in some Areas but major metros do not have such problem.... so just you posting some news doesn't make it regular for metros....

Good post but why is South Korea so high in per capita usage? AFAIK, it is not some Arctic country even if cold in winter, shouldn't have the large houses to heat/cool, and presumably, like Asians are, disciplined in energy usage.
Or maybe they have all the light bulbs lit all the time! ;)
