"Where does this end?"
Hopefully, it'll end with the World's honest football authorities leaving FIFA and starting up a new, Fairplay World Cup.
And if the USA cheat past Belgium tomorrow, the other seven nations should withdraw, organise the quarter finals somewhere else and invite the cheated Belgians to take part.
Well, it really has escalated over here.
The media echo chamber in the US is an interesting one. Fox Sports et al should have always approached the matter more objectively instead of the jingoism they have been demonstrating there. I don't think the pundits they hired have spoken well on the issue either - it smacks of informational suppression/direction. Had the likes of Henri or Zlatan actually spoken objectively and accurately, they would have managed expectations for the US fanbase.
Again, I don't think USA football authorities are blameworthy (though we don't yet know how involved they were in these various communications between politicians and FIFA, I suppose), nor is Balogun himself, nor Pochettino. Their reactions were all par for the course and expected. Trump and Rubio however are top tier numpties for actually thinking political interference was a good idea and furthermore, for publicly gloating about it!
Whatever happens now, FIFA are going to come out as a compromised organisation. Whether Infantino sticks to his guns or backtracks, the damage is done.
The mistake some friends are making is to assume that UEFA and European footballing nations are somehow toothless. The reality is quite the opposite to what some folks believe. Europe (including UK) is the de facto custodian of the professional game, rightly so. I genuinely think there will be huge backlash for Infantino now after reading UEFA's statement. We all remember what happened to Sepp Blatter a decade back. They called him the Silvio Berlusconi of football for a reason!
Personally, I am a fan of US football and hope the backlash is rightly steered away from the team and their management and directed towards FIFA for their shockingly visible corruption.
