Iran was handed a political victory on a silver platter. They had survived the initial assault, shown that they could hurt the other side and created enough pressure to bring everyone to the negotiating table. They did not need to defeat the US militarily, they only needed to take the deal, preserve their gains and dclare victory.

But the IRGC mistook leverage for superiority. They overestimated their own strength, underestimated the military and economic imbalance and thought that more escalation would bring them even better terms.

Now their own leadership is looking for negotiations, but the other side is no longer responding. Why would they? Iran rejected talks when its leverage was at its strongest and is now asking for the same talks from a much weaker position.
