What happened to Hong Kong ? It's falling behind other Chinese regions and also Singapore. The social unrests instigated by CIA in the past decade few years ago must have taken a toll. Surprisingly, Vietnam is not performing as well as in other mathematical Olympiad test.

I would not put too much weight on Pisa ranking alone, there are many other assessments. Vietnam ranking in Pisa fluctuates very much. That mostly comes from fluctuations in motivation.
in general Vietnamese students ranked second behind Singapore in ASEAN.
Last year we ranked bad, from what I read because Pisa switching from paper tests to computer tests. That’s something most were not prepared.

China normally tops the list which is why they dominate so many critical tech sectors. Vietnam is closer to East Asian rankings than ASEAN rankings and yes Singapore is mostly East asian culture and chinese ethnics.

Math Olympiad are for selective elite, while PISA shows the education qualitty of the mass. For example, Rwanda, the worst country in math this year, can still rank much higher in Olympiad if their delegation comprised math genius of Jewish background (supposed there are Jews residing there)..

And in Vietnam, there is an education gap between the North and the South. Almost all Olympiad delegation are from the North. Some are from HCM city, but their background are unclear, as their parents can be from the North. There have probably never been an Olympiad members from Mekong delta in 50 years.of Vietnam participating world Olympiad.

According to the 2022 result report breakdown by region, in which the North students led the South by almost 20 points in Math, the North students math score might be around 460 in 2025. Still very low by East Asian standard, but i hope it can be improved. In 2012, Vietnam scored well above Germany, UK and France in math.

Chinese culture of hard work talk less bullsh1t rubbed off on Vietnam over millenias and if they continue to develop they can do well perhaps. Well at least better than countries like indonesia or phillipines.

I clearly remember starting to study calculus at the age of 15, followed by discrete mathematics two years later. My son, however, did not begin studying calculus until he reached the undergraduate level at university.

Vietnam is likely to out perform Malaysia and Thailand in the long run. The dominant culture in those two countries is not Confucian but some laid back ones and ethnic Chinese there are distant minorities, though with some significant numbers.

Quite similar to the British GCSE maths syllabus then. I started learning calculus as part of the O Levl/GCSE maths syllabus at 14 years in the 9th grade.

I also studied calculus in high school in Canada. They also offer advanced math class to some students here. So, sounds like China is trying to adopt American style happy learning at schools.
