Japan has been a democracy and firmly pacifist for decades. The appetite for war there simply doesn't exist anymore. China, on the other hand, is an authoritarian regime that tightly controls its narratives and suppresses dissent. That makes mobilizing the population for conflict far easier in China than it ever could be in Japan today.

Lol, Germany Hitler gov was democratically elected too, yet it started the most dreadful WW II in history. US was a democratic country when it started the decade long brutal Vietnam war. Most recently, Trump was also elected and US has a so called democratic gov too, yet they keep waging wars around the world, the latest being Iran war that is still going on and VZ, lol. China has an "authoritarian" regime according to your definition, yet China is at peace with the world, it hasn't engaged in any war with any country for almost 50 years now, let alone starting one. So, is your so called democracies such as US and very possible Japan in the near future are inherently more peaceful than so called "authoritarian" country such as China ? Your argument is laughable.
