World rice production hit nearly 780 million tonnes in 2022, making it the fourth-most produced cereal grain after wheat, corn, and sugarcane.

This graphic breaks down the world’s largest producers of rice in 2022, based on data from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (UN FAO).

The world’s most populous countries, China and India, top the list of largest rice producers, each with around 200 million tonnes.

In fact, these two countries together grow more rice than the rest of the world combined. India is also the world’s largest rice exporter, accounting for one-third of rice exports by itself.



Noticeably, the majority of the world’s rice production is in Asia. This is due to a combination of climatic, geographic, cultural, and economic factors.

For example, rice requires a warm, humid climate (found throughout Asia), and is also a staple food in the Asian diet.

Brazil, ranked 11th with 11 million tonnes, is the only non-Asian country on this list. The Portuguese brought rice to the region in the 16th century, and since then, it has flourished in the warm, humid climate, becoming a diet staple. The Amazon region of the country also has two native rice species.

Also missing from this list is the U.S., which exports half of its total rice production (5 million tonnes) making it the fifth largest rice-exporter in the world.

India is also the world’s largest rice exporter, accounting for one-third of rice exports by itself.

This always puzzles me, how come China is the world biggest rice importer and India the biggest exporter while China grows more rice than India and the two countries have similar size of population.

This always puzzles me, how come China is the world biggest rice importer and India the biggest exporter while China grows more rice than India and the two countries have similare size of population.

A lot of people in north northwest India dont eat rice and consider it poor peoples food, so consumption is lower compared to wheat.

Plus India exports high quality long grain rice because of its huge demand, and it sells more than double the price of east asian short sticky rice, which is considered poorer quality rice out in the middleeast and wetern importing nations.

A lot of people in north northwest India dont eat rice and consider it poor peoples food, so consumption is lower compared to wheat.

Plus India exports high quality long grain rice because of its huge demand, and it sells more than double the price of east asian short sticky rice, which is considered poorer quality rice out in the middleeast and wetern importing nations.

I might be able to give you an idea
Most people In the north and western india( majority of the population) don't eat rice as staple food they prefer wheat and millets
And only eat rice As a small part of their meal

Southern an eastern people traditionally eat rice as part of every meal They only eat wheat on special occasions

We are leading in exports because we grow one of the best varieties of rice - BASMATI considered the best and the production of this variety is best suited to our northern and eastern climate

There are more than 1100 varieties of rice grown in india but still as a north indian who is currently living in south i must say wherever you go our agricultural products are the finest

You probably get your rice from Chinatown, they only sell cheap sticky rice there.

Meanwhile USDA clearly states india is their second largest source of aromatic better varieties.

Most U.S. rice imports are specific aromatic varieties from Asia, with jasmine from Thailand and basmati from India and Pakistan. Since 2011, South American exporters have shipped 15,000–40,000 tons of non-aromatic, long-grain milled rice to the United States annually, mostly due to competitive prices.

It's not about rice it's about lifestyle choices we make , the human body is designed to move not to sit all day long ( that's the case with most of the people today)
Nowadays no one is getting the physical movement , our ancestors used to walk miles and work in their fields almost all day long

Now we are just sitting and eating!!!
