It is very bad bro. Got a call from a friend who is active in the protest. Here are the details -

More than 200+ killed and counting.

The govt is creating confusion by shutting down internet and then implementing curfew.

Then they arrested the top leaders of the student protest. (source)

After that they staged a drama by getting 3 students (one of them is a Chatra league member) and arranged a meet with 3 BAL ministers, saying the students have agreed to sit down for negotiation based on 8 point demand. The govt did a press conference on this and this is available in BBC Bangla (Source). BUT, the reality is that this is all staged. The general students have not made any demand nor agreed to sit down with the govt. The protest is to continue and this is no longer about quota, it is about getting Hasina to step down.

This guy has been kicked out of the committe of coordinators for student protest, because clearly he was a dual agent for the govt. and has now backstabbed the general students. The left is the image from the press conference they held and the right is an old picture from a Chatra League event.

It is now or never. If they cannot get rid of Hasina now, not only BD is doomed for the foreseeable future, but she will end up in power till she dies.

The fact that she enforced curfew and Obaidul Qader talking about shoot at sight suggests they are desperate. That's why there is complete blackout. Phone calls are getting in with VOIP but very poor connection. BD is completely cut off from the rest of the world.
 
How much are the chances of Myanmar seeing this an opportunity to attack and capture St. Martin island? MM navy was there last month....

We need her, not only the people of Bangladesh but also Indians and Pakistanis, to rule for another 10 years at least. In many ways what Bangobandhobi regime has achieved is a template for progress for all the poorer parts of the subcontinent, BD, Pakistan, BIMARU region of India.

  • Internet hasn't been restored completely yet, but the call quality has improved so more news coming in from Bangladesh. This is the most neutral news source at this time, since nothing else is coming out apart from sanitized reports from Govt sources through BBC Bangla and Indian Media.
  • Army has been deployed in key govt installation, not as much on the streets.
  • Even though BAL leader Obaidul ordered a "Shoot at sight" order, Army has not yet conducted that. They have been checking IDs of people though. This shows there is a clear disconnect between the army and the govt. Earlier there was a strong unsubstiated reports coming out that the army didn't want to come out under civilian administration and DGFI had sequestered the 3 forces chiefs to pressurize and convince them to agree to deploying the troops as per govt. wishes.
  • Students and General People are resisting across the country in small pockets, even though a curfew is in effect.
    • Police having a lot of casualties. Uttara and Gabtoli areas of Dhaka reported multiple Police casualty.
    • Thousands of protesters in Rampura area of Dhaka - Police shelling tear gas from helicopters
  • All the main leaders of the general student protest are now missing / unreachable - presumably arrested by the state. They had earlier announced that the protest will continue to go on despite their death and/or arrest.

Chaotic Bangladesh protests are a symptom of a wider problem​

CHAOS has engulfed Dhaka, as well as other parts of Bangladesh, over the past few days. Anti-government protests had been gaining momentum for several weeks, yet popular outrage exploded after several demonstrators were killed in confrontations with security forces and government supporters. Educational institutions have been shut, many media outlets are off air, while a widespread internet blackout has been reported from the country. According to one count, around 40 people have died in the violence, while hundreds are injured.

Students have been at the forefront of the protests. Many young people took to the streets after a court reinstated quotas for the children and grandchildren of ‘freedom fighters’ — those who participated in the creation of Bangladesh in 1971 — in government jobs. Public sector employment is a popular option for many in Bangladesh, yet nearly half the jobs are reserved under various quotas. With the economy stagnating and millions of Bangladeshis out of work, the court decision has unleashed much pent-up anger. The situation remained tense on Friday, with sporadic protests reported from the country.

The demonstrations over job quotas cannot be seen in isolation, as an economic slowdown, as well as a sense of political disenfranchisement, has created an explosive situation in Bangladesh. Prime Minister Shaikh Hasina Wajed secured a record fourth term in elections held earlier this year. Boycotted by the opposition, they had raised questions of legitimacy. Earlier, Shaikh Hasina had overseen a crackdown against opposition forces, including the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.

In such a politically polarised atmosphere, with economic growth not meeting the expectations of many Bangladeshis, such mass protests were only a matter of time. Thousands of garment workers had also taken to the streets last year demanding higher wages. The Bangladesh government should deal with the situation carefully lest the protests spiral out of control. The demonstrators’ legitimate demands should be met, while the deaths of protesters should be investigated in a transparent manner.

Moreover, the unfortunate events playing out in Bangladesh should serve as a warning sign for other South Asian states. Political victimisation coupled with economic stagnation and heavy-handed state reaction is a recipe for disaster. All political forces should be allowed to freely operate as per democratic norms, while the state needs to act with compassion and transparency in times of economic distress.
