The notion that Bashar is merely a reluctant president, "allowed" by others in his family or the power structure is absurd. Assad is not simply a victim of circumstances. He actively took power and has held onto it for decades through brutal force. This is no accident, but cold calculation. He may not have been the original candidate of choice, but he quickly learned how to play the game and how to win.
The entire family and power base is involved, that's what I think.

Iran's presence in Syria is the result of an expansionist policy
Iran's presence in Syria is the result of long-time geopolitical alliances and the invitation of Iran to help Syria during the war.

There is no any border between Iran and Syria while Turkiye has 910 km borderline with Syria
There's no border between Turkey and Libya and yet you pretend this is legal

This expansionist policy of Iran, which negatively affects everything from the refugee crisis to terrorist groups that threaten Turkiye's territorial integrity, is causing fatal damage to Turkiye
Talking about expansionist policies

During the year war in Gaza , there was radio silence from Assad , even as Israel was striking inside Syria, Assad was pretending like it doesn’t concern him…you people admire this man and his repulsive regime!
Radio silence? Tell me,how do you want the destroyed Syrian Armed Forces to respond to Israeli air strikes? First,Hamas betrayed him during the war. Then, the Russians gave Syria old S-300 variants, just for show. Then Russians told Israelis not to bomb their bases and let them do whatever they want in the rest of the country. The economy destroyed, the country torn to pieces,Americans staying inside the east part of the country like vultures,
the Turks in the north, training, arming and funding their own goons, the Iranians focused on Houthis and Lebanon...and you expect Assad to do what? Go out and say "If you don't stop we'll attack you"? What do you expect from Syria? The government has been barely trying to survive the last few years and slowly trying to rebuild.

Assad is going to put up a defence when the Alawite heartland is at risk.

Not sure why they were caught napping initially at this rebel attack.
@Ali_Baba You guys also have to think that the best and most loyal men died in 10 years of fighting. The majority of the best generals, officers, soldiers died fighting. What's left now is random conscripts and survivors of previous engagements. Morale must be very low. The economy must be very low,the weapons and equipment are already low quality.

I think the Iraqis have to get in the country and restore the balance.

If they can go from Aleppo to Hama to Homs they can cut off the Assad forces from the coast

If they reach Damascus which is not far that’s the situation like 2013 before Russia came to help Assad

Will they this time take the presidential palace ?

Will Assad flee to Russia to will he end up like Gadaffi and Saddam giving street justice ?

Syria will become lawless society with infighting like Libya and Iraq

And these rebels will fight each other for power after Assad leaves

All that may be true but it still does not excuse the HTS going through the SAA like a hot knife through butter.

Assad had ten years to rebuild, plan, anticipate. And it seems that he’s frittered them away.

I would have understood if the SAA had retreated step by step, then one could have made the lack of resources argument. We all have to make do with the resources at hand.

But you can’t use it to explain why this army has performed so poorly

They are not idiot

Now is different, HTS is the real power among opposition. SDF is already powerful under US protection

Only Turkish backed rebel that can destroy the unity of the opposition by attaking SDF.

10 years no,maybe 4-5. But I agree with you that they performed so badly and did little to fortify the surroundings of the city just in case. I also blame the Russians for not equipping the SAA better in both personal gear and heavy weaponry, before the war in Ukraine. They left their ally look like a ragtag militia. No superpower does that.

Assad will draw a red line soon and Homs might be that stalingrad. Alawites can attack rebels from the West while Assad and allies can attack from the South.

Dont make excuses. Syria has still some pretty good missiles in its arsenal. They fired 0 times directly at Israel. The most cucked nation on earth is Syria.

IR on the other hand broke the curse and atleast twice attacked Israel, directly from its soil. They got huge balls.
