The Russians could have done a lot since 2015-2016. A lot more. They could have helped restructure the SAA and give more equipment and AA protection.I don't think you can blame Russia solely.
RuAF went all out in the first few days and if the SAA just fought in the cities like Hamah where they had large garrisons, then it would have been different.
SAA infantry and RuAF would have won a decisive victory and stopped the rebels at Hamah. Aleppo was lost at that point.
Russia simply could not believe that the SAA would fold like that and just run away. They obviously got frustrated and realised within the first week that this was a losing cause. Russia alone cannot fight for Syria if SAA was not prepared to do its part on the ground.
As for Armenia, I found that really strange that Russia would abandon the Armenians like that. It seems that they wanted to focus on Ukraine and probably Syria/ME as well.
Russia has lost a lot of its strength over the last 3 years in Ukraine and poor Armenia was sacrificed first it seems.
I thought the Iraqis would go in these days, but they didn't either. The Iranians too far,the Lebanese too weak now.
