Doesn't make sense. Syria is a secular Arab nation, not 'Islamic'. Its name is 'Syrian Arab Republic', not Islamic Republic (like Afghanistan, Iran, Mauritania, Pakistan). Assad belonged to the fringe sect of Alawites, not the mainstream Syrians. Of note, he did not seek asylum in any Arab or Islamic country.
