I feel very bad for them.

Baathists were basically some kind of Islamic socialism system, nevermind the familias.

I knew a Syrian proper guy, from Lattakia province something.. it used to be a very everyday thing around there, apparently.. that neighbours would only find out the others' mazhab/dharm/religion during weddings etc.. people would go thru their whole lives not knowing, nor caring what the family next door's religious blah (in any) was.

Or so I was told was the case...

Very anecdotal, and who is to say ? but it was probably true.

Now you got all this extremist salafist scum running around, beyond terrible.

God knows what baathists were ! But the truth is that the middle east has not seen a ray if hope in its entire post colonial existence!
No democracy, no modern ideas (except a few), countless wars , bloodshed,and all the jihadi madness after the 80's

Maybe the salafists have something to do with it ,maybe not
It just too complex to say anything,I might create a thread why these islamic democracies ( as they call themselves )are bound to fail
