Question for the Americans on this forum. Why are there only 2 political parties in the USA? Given its size, i would have expected a larger multi-party system? Are there restrictions saying you can only have 2 parties?

What stops the growth of the American political system interms of political diversity ?

Here in the UK, we have half a dozen alone.
