Pakistan-India Conflict 2025: News Updates and Discussion

@Sam6536 Is it communal violence in Manipur or terrorism or struggle for self determination?
Ethnic conflict. Which isn't exactly communal in nature.

The two parties are Meitei who are Hindu and Kuki who are Christians.

It has more to do with land rights and political representation. Meiteis are more integrated with mainstream society and they dominate the government sector and political spectrum. Kukis are hill based tribes and aren't as well represented.

The conflict started due to Meitei demanding (Scheduled Tribes status) the Kuki who already come under ST classification saw this as a threat to their rights, as currently Meitei could not buy land in hill areas but after getting this status they could also Kuki's reservation rights would be affected.

The area borders Myanmar and for decades there was FMR (Free movement regime) where people on both sides could openly cross to other side. This has been restricted now. So the contention by Meiteis was that many illegal Myanmarese had joined the kukis.

Both these groups have armed groups. Decades back some groups asked for secession from India, but after talks and supression by army in some cases the more hardcore groups were eradicated and others signed peace treaties with India and either disbanded or stopped their activities.

So yeah this is the essential gist of it. Currently there are occasional flare ups but the Indian army is posted there for controlling this.

Why dont you just divide manipur into 2 states where 1 is for kuki and 1 is for the meiteis seems much easier that way

This will open a different can of worms - North East has a lot of different ethnic groups. All would ask for seperate states or modified borders then.

Also technically according to Article 3 of the Constitution the Parliament can form new states but they need assent of state legislature, Manipur legislature is Meitei dominated, Meitei don't won't any division of the state.

I doubt consent of the state legislature was achieved in the following cases:
- Telengana separating from Andhra
-Jharkhand separating from Bihar
- Haryana separating from Punjab
- Ladakh separating from Kashmir

The British had deliberately divided India into Presidencies so that linguistic, ethnic and regional chauvinism is minimized and India could hopefully blend over centuries into some kind of homogeneity. Now India continues to fracture along language, and ethnicity.

Supposedly they arrested the leader of these meitei rebels and they were putting petrol in their heads and threatning to burn themselves
So it's a struggle for self determination?

How do Indians define communal violence then?
