So it may just be a case of Iran formally requesting Pakistan for help in setting up its air force.

I don't think Pakistan giving / selling Iran fighter jets would help Iran much. An entire Airforce ecosystem will have to be built in Iran, similar to Pakistan's, which IMO is THE most efficient in the world considering Pakistan's severe economic limitations.
Hopefully, once this conflict settles down, Iran asks the Pakistanis for help in exchange for creatively providing Pakistan oil and/or natural gas. There is no better way to make the Iranian Airforce better than by collaborating with Pakistan.

We should see how things turn out.
We don't have an air force. So, at this point, we'll have to fight back like the Taliban.
But I don't think the people of Iran would fight back like that, particularly because the majority of people in the cities are not very fond of the regime.

It will be a disaster either way, but I'm sure the west will say they're only sending these ships to protect their own interests.
