Outside of the Presidential Palace in Kabul the day after the Saur Revolution, 28th April 1978.

The Saur Revolution, also romanized Sowr Revolution, and alternatively called the April Revolution or April Coup, was a coup d'état led by the Soviet-backed People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan against the rule of Afghan President Mohammed Daoud Khan on 27–28 April 1978.

A guerrilla soldier aims a stinger missle at passing aircraft near a remote rebel base in the Safed Koh Mountains February 10, 1988 in Afghanistan.

The end of Soviet military occupation, which began in 1979, has left the Afghan Army more vulnerable to these guerrilla forces, who are fighting the Russian-installed Afghan government.

Highway Patrol": An Afghan police officer in front of his company vehicle. German police trainers have been coming to Afghanistan since the late 1950's.

In the 1960's, no country spent more money on development aid in Afghanistan than Germany. In the mid-seventies, the GDR took over the training of the police.

The remains of the Afghan Independence Monument. This monument once towered over Kabul and originally was flanked by four statues of warriors.

Met many Afghans over the years. Uzbeks, Tajiks, Hazaras and even some Sikhs.
Very proud of their heritage and language Diri/Farsi.

Back when Afghanistan was free from invasion both from West, USSR and civil war.

Afghanistan is part of ancient Khorasan. Birth place of my people. And site of our last stand, before we moved south, with our fires on horseback, towards the port city of Hormuz.

It is also most likely the birth place of Zarathushtra and where his tomb lies (under the Mazar e Sharif blue mausoleum).

I pray for Afghanistan as I pray for Iran.

One day.

Ushta te.

Cheers, Doc

Group Of Attan Dancers From Zadran & Mangal Tribe Performing The Attan, The National Dance Of The Pashtuns, On The Occasion Of The Independence Day Celebrations, Baghlan, Afghanistan, 1944 (c).

The Zadran and Mangal have baggy white trousers that narrow downwards and are quite tight above the ankles and close with a mostly embroidered ribbon, a pleated shirt with very wide sleeves, an embroidered waistcoat and a light-colored turban, sometimes a black one. The waistcoats are different, partly made of wool with colorful, severe, ornamental embroidery.

That seems to have been the traditional costume. The gold-embroidered velvet creatures that are offered everywhere in the bazaars are more widespread today. If they are a little worn, they look particularly beautiful.

The embroideries on the shirts, colorful rosettes on the puffy sleeves, frames along the chest piece, and ornaments on the side shirt slits are interesting.
