Altay & Turkish Main Battle Tank Programs

I have much respect for the Koreans. However, I'm wondering if Seoul would cave in if the US were to put pressure on them to disturb the ongoing Turkish defence projects, possibly even export agreements.

I don't think so. Seoul has a strong relationship with Turkey. Seoul is more independent in their outlook than Europe/Canada with regards to US influence. They used to even cooperate with Russia to develop defense equipment, their KM-SAM is actually using the same missile as the S-350. So unless tensions get to Iran level bad or Russia invading Ukraine bad, I don't see Seoul pulling away the way Germany did with the Syrian intervention. The bigger concern is any potential German or Western sub system inside the powerpack, though from what I've read the Koreans have indigenized them.

South Korea out of all of Turkey's defense partners is solid. I'd say in terms of solidness, its something like #1 South Korea, #2 Spain, #3 Italy, #4 UK, and then it gets shaky from there with the US and Germany, etc.

When we started this, Koreans didn't have an engine project. They started and finished it and they are selling it to us.

Words can not express my anger.

What is the current status of Turkey's indigenous tank engine ?

Gentleman we are getting closer and closer.

The prototypes with the South Korean engine and transmission are in testing and whatever fine tuning should be finished soon.

The first batch is supposed to be 250 tanks. with atleast 85 of them will be with the South Korean Powerpack, and the rest if everything goes well will be with the Altay powerpack, otherwise they will likely put an order for more South Korean units, to keep the production steady.

In related news it looks like South Korea's own K2 Black Panther Tank is also set to go into production with the SNT Dynamics EST15K transmission at the end of the year or next year. It remains to be seen whether the Altay or the K2 will be the first to be in serial production with the EST15K.

This project has dragged on for so long that I don't believe the officials' statements. I will believe it when I see Mehmetçik start using the tank.

I think it might be real this time, the engine and transmission were the only impediment, and with the Korean powerpack that was doing testing for 1 whole year, the problem should in theory be solved. Everything else on the tank is Turkish, or license built in Turkey. When they announced it, they said mass production would be in 2025, but we have seen them move the timeline up, like they did with the KAAN, when things were farther and easier than projected.

Great timing, no many tanks available on world market.

There are a few, but demand seems to be outpacing production. I think the Altay enjoys certain advantages others don't have, its NATO standard without NATO strings attached. I think the K2 Black Panther is the only other tank that fits the profile, but we don't know if the Koreans have additional production capacity at the moment, as Poland put in a huge order plus they have to build out their own fleet.

Production will catch up eventually or paced up if some sudden orders emerges for it,. I would add one more potential advantage if something like that is planned for altay, i mean integration of drones and AI into tank warfare for which you have know how, if you manage to elevate 100 years old weapon into 21st century platform it will certainly have brighter future then it is planned for it.
