The Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) delivered its fourth domestically developed C919 passenger plane to China Eastern Airlines for commercial operation on Tuesday.
The delivery was completed by a short flight in the morning from the Shanghai Pudong International Airport to the Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport.
The delivered plane is one of the five aircraft that China Eastern Airlines has ordered in its first purchase of five C919 planes in 2021. The third one was delivered in early December 2023.
As of December 31, 2023, the C919 aircraft of China Eastern Airlines has carried out 655 commercial flights, carrying nearly 82,000 passengers, since the C919's maiden commercial flight on May 28, 2023.
In September 2023, China Eastern Airlines purchased 100 more C919 planes from COMAC, the largest order for the jet. The planes will be delivered in batches from 2024 to 2031.

The C919, China's self-developed large passenger aircraft, commenced operation on a new route connecting the megacities of Beijing and Shanghai on Tuesday.
Flight MU5137, operated by China Eastern Airlines, departed from Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport around 3:40 pm With a seat occupancy rate of over 85 percent, the flight reached Beijing Daxing International Airport nearly two hours later.
This marks the second regular route for the C919, following the previously launched Shanghai Hongqiao-Chengdu Tianfu route.
"I was on a business trip to Beijing and didn't specifically choose the flight or aircraft type. Unexpectedly, I found myself on the C919. It was a pleasant surprise," said a passenger surnamed Wang, who was onboard MU5137 on Tuesday.
"The operation of the C919 on the Beijing-Shanghai route holds special significance," said Tang Bing, director and vice party secretary of China Eastern Air Holding Company Limited.
"With the C919's regular operations on this route, it will further enhance its market adaptability and overall support capabilities," Tang said, adding that it will also provide opportunities for more passengers to experience the country's homegrown large passenger aircraft.
The C919 launched its first commercial flight in May 2023 and has operated regularly between Shanghai and Chengdu, the capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province.
As of December 31, the China Eastern Airlines' C919 fleet has accumulated more than 2,200 safe flight hours, completed 655 commercial flight trips, and transported nearly 82,000 passengers.
China Eastern Airlines signed a purchase contract in September 2023 with Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, Ltd. (COMAC) for an additional 100 C919 planes, marking the largest single order for this aircraft.
Developed by COMAC, the first C919 aircraft rolled off the production line in Shanghai in November 2015. The plane conducted a successful maiden flight in 2017.
China has a massive civil aviation market with great potential. According to a market forecast released by COMAC in late 2022, over the 2022-2041 period, China's civil aviation market will receive 9,284 new planes, including 6,288 single-aisle jetliners.
By 2041, China is expected to become the world's largest single-country civil aviation market, according to the forecast.

China Southern Airlines has opened reservations for its inaugural flights using Comac C919 aircraft.

The airline received its first C919 on Aug. 28 during a joint ceremony with Air China, signifying the introduction of the domestically developed aircraft to all three state-owned Chinese carriers.

According to OAG Schedules Analyser data, China Southern plans to operate its initial C919 flights between Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN) and Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (SHA). The daily service is set to commence on Sept. 19.

The airline already serves the 730-mi. (634-nm) sector up to nine times per day using a mix of Airbus A321neos, A330s, A350-900s, Boeing 737-8s, 777-300s, 787-8s and 787-9s. Up to three flights per day are also offered between Guangzhou and Shanghai Pudong International Airport.

China Eastern Airlines was the launch customer for the C919 and currently operates five routes using the aircraft type, including flying twice a day between CAN and SHA. It also flies from SHA to Xi'an Xianyang International Airport (XIY) up to 8X-daily; to Chengdu Tianfu International Airport up to 7X-daily; and double-daily to Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX). The fifth C919 route connects PKX and XIY with two flights per day.

China Southern’s C919 aircraft will have a three-class configuration: eight in business, 18 in premium economy and 138 in economy. Its first aircraft is registered as B-919J.

The planned entry into service comes as the C919 carried its 500,000th passenger—just over 15 months after making its commercial debut in May 2023. The aircraft type has also logged more than 10,000 flight hours and completed 3,700 commercial flights.

China Eastern currently operates seven C919 aircraft and has 98 more on order. Both China Southern and Air China have each received one C919, with orders for an additional 104 and 99 aircraft, respectively.
