A Chinese aircraft carrier spotted near the Philippines. What does it mean?

South China Morning Post
Sun, 30 June 2024 at 2:30 am GMT-7·4-min read

A Chinese aircraft carrier reportedly patrolled the waters off the Philippines in an operation that observers say was a message to Manila and Washington.

The aircraft carrier is widely believed to be the Shandong, China's most advanced aircraft carrier in service.

It was detected sailing northwest from the Philippine island of Luzon in the South China Sea, according to a satellite image provided on Wednesday by MizarVision, a Shanghai-based technology and intelligence company.

European satellite Sentinel-1 also detected the aircraft carrier patrolling the waters on the same day.

According to Sentinel-2, an aircraft carrier last week left Sanya, Hainan province, the homeport of the Shandong carrier.

Neither the Chinese nor the Philippine defence ministry commented on the image. They also did not respond to requests from the Post for comment.

Ni Lexiong, a defence professor in the department of political science at Shanghai University of Political Science and Law, said the Shandong's passage was meant to be a deterrent to Manila and Washington, and underline "China's determination to protect territorial sea sovereignty" amid tensions over the Second Thomas Shoal.

The People's Liberation Army has stepped up drills in the South China Sea in recent months. Last week, four navy ships - two destroyers, a frigate, and a supply vessel - were spotted near the southwestern Philippine island of Palawan in the South China Sea.

Chester Cabalza, president and founder of International Development and Security Cooperation, a Manila-based think tank, said the carrier's patrol was an example of "performative politics" by Beijing that could become a frequent event.

If so, it "would mean that there is a red flag on their national security", he said, adding that "once we see massive military force, that means that Beijing is preparing for a war".

Former PLA instructor Song Zhongping said the aircraft carrier may head to the Western Pacific Ocean later and rendezvous with four navy ships near the Philippine island of Palawan.

"The Shandong can go to all of these places, including waters to the east of Taiwan, the Western Pacific Ocean, and all of the South China Sea. Aircraft carriers usually travel with battleships on the side to protect them, so it's normal if [the Shandong and the navy ships] converge."

Tensions between China and the Philippines have escalated over the Second Thomas shoal, known as Renai Jiao in China and Ayungin Shoal in the Philippines.

In June, a Chinese coastguard ship intercepted several Philippine Navy vessels on a routine resupply mission to troops stationed at a decaying former warship on the shoal.

Chinese coastguard crew members armed with knives, machetes, and other weapons intercepted the Philippine troops, according to footage of the incident, resulting in a Filipino losing a thumb.

While there is hope of dialogue - Philippine Foreign Secretary Enrique Manalo said last week that Manila was working on holding talks in July with Beijing over their South China Sea differences - the Philippines is fortifying its relationship with treaty partner the United States.

The US deployed the mid-range Typhon missile system in the Philippines last month.

The system can launch SM-6 missiles with a range of up to 370km (230 miles) and cruise missiles that can carry conventional or nuclear warheads and have a range of up to 2,500km, according to the Washington-based Centre for Strategic and International Studies.

And a year ago the Philippines agreed to give the US access to four more of its military bases.

Ni, from Shanghai, said the Shandong's patrol might also be a direct response to the US-led Rimpac exercise, which started on Thursday.

The Rim of the Pacific exercise is the world's biggest international maritime military drill, and will take place near Hawaii until August. One of the major focuses this year is an exercise to sink the USS Tarawa, a 40,000-tonne retired amphibious assault ship. China is the only US competitor in the Asia-Pacific that has a comparable warship.

Last year, the Shandong's centre of attention was Taiwan, with the vessel conducting offshore drills near the island in April and September.

Foreign media: Satellite images show Shandong ship arrives in waters near the Philippines

2024-07-01 07:08 Source: Global Times New Media
Published in: Beijing

Our reporter Guo Yuandan

Agence France-Presse reported on June 29 that as the conflict between China and the Philippines in the South China Sea continued, commercial satellites captured the Shandong ship leaving the port and arriving in "waters near the Philippines", and stated that "China has sent an aircraft carrier to the waters near the Philippines for the first time, with the intention of deterrence."

The report said that images taken by commercial satellites showed that the Shandong ship, which had left the port, appeared in waters 200 nautical miles (about 360 kilometers) from the Philippines. "It is very likely to remind the Philippines not to covet territories that do not belong to it and not to intrude into the Ren'ai Reef again."

Earlier, the Philippine military claimed that the Chinese Coast Guard had rammed a Philippine ship carrying out a supply mission at Ren'ai Reef, injuring a Philippine crew member. U.S. State Department and Defense Department officials chimed in to accuse China of blocking the Philippines' supply operations, saying that the U.S. side firmly supports the Philippines in accordance with the U.S.-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty. Against this background, some foreign media analysts believe that the Shandong ship's trip was intended to deter the Philippines.

Military expert Zhang Junshe said in an interview with the Global Times on June 30: "Since the Shandong ship was officially commissioned at the end of 2019, it has conducted training in many sea areas including the South China Sea, the East China Sea and the Taiwan Strait. The Shandong ship's appearance in the South China Sea this time is normal training."

In 2023, the Shandong aircraft carrier went out of the island chain for training three times. In April 2023, the Shandong aircraft carrier crossed the Bashi Channel and passed through the southeastern waters of Taiwan Island to conduct its first training in the Western Pacific. After that, the Shandong aircraft carrier went out of the island chain for long-distance training twice in September and October. Three times in one year, this set a record for Chinese aircraft carriers going out of the island chain for long-distance training. Zhang Xiaogang, a spokesman for the Chinese Ministry of National Defense, said last year about the Shandong aircraft carrier's long-distance voyage: "The Chinese military will organize similar training activities on a regular basis."

Zhang Junshe said that China's aircraft carriers have already normalized their long-distance training in the South China Sea and the Western Pacific, which is inseparable from the combat missions they undertake. Aircraft carriers are responsible for maritime defense and cannot always stay in their home ports. They must improve the overall combat capabilities of aircraft carriers and aircraft carrier formations during long-distance training. "Whether the Shandong ship conducts regular training in the South China Sea or in the Western Pacific, it is in line with international law and international practices, and is conducive to improving the ability to safeguard national sovereignty, security, and development interests, and is conducive to maintaining regional and world peace and stability."

In response to the international media's high attention to the movements of Chinese aircraft carriers and their speculative analysis, Zhang Junshe believes that the development of China's naval forces, including aircraft carriers and 10,000-ton destroyers, and the improvement of its maritime combat capabilities can enable the Chinese Navy to effectively safeguard the country's territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests. "This is naturally a strong deterrent to individual countries that carry out infringement and provocation against China. For the infringement and provocation of some countries in the South China Sea, the Chinese military will resolutely defend China's territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests."

China's aircraft carrier Shandong spotted near Philippines amid tensions

China's aircraft carrier Shandong was recently spotted sailing near the Philippines in a move media said serves as a deterrence against continuous Philippine provocations on Chinese islands and reefs in the South China Sea.

The aircraft carrier is likely on a scheduled exercise that could also prepare it for a potential far seas voyage into the West Pacific, Chinese experts said on Sunday.

Citing commercial satellite images, Hong Kong news outlet the Singtao Daily and media on the island of Taiwan reported on Saturday that the aircraft carrier Shandong of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy recently arrived in waters about 200 nautical miles away from Luzon Island, the Philippines.

At a time when the tensions persist between China and the Philippines over islands and reefs in the South China Sea, China's first deployment of an aircraft carrier to waters near the Philippines aims to deter, media said.

Previous media reports suggest that the PLA has already sent major surface combat ships including Type 055 large destroyers and Type 052D destroyers, as well as main amphibious vessels such as a Type 075 amphibious assault ship and a Type 071 amphibious landing ship to the South China Sea.

It is completely normal that the aircraft carrier Shandong conducts training exercises in the South China Sea, because only through training can the carrier gain combat capabilities, Zhang Junshe, a Chinese military expert, told the Global Times on Sunday.

To the Philippines that has been conducting infringing provocations, these forces will naturally become a deterrence, as the Chinese military will resolutely defend China's territorial sovereignty and maritime rights, Zhang said.

Media reports said that the aircraft carrier Shandong's main mission is likely not the Philippines, but a far seas voyage beyond the first island chain into the West Pacific, because China does not need to deploy an aircraft carrier amid the ongoing tension with the Philippines.

Another Chinese military expert, who requested anonymity, told the Global Times on Sunday that the aircraft carrier Shandong conducted multiple far seas exercises beyond the first island chain last year, so it will likely also hold similar drills this year.

It is normal that it makes preparation trainings in the South China Sea before sailing to more distant waters, the above-quoted expert said.

These are very vulnerable navy assets, during the peace time - it's okay but crunch time will be in safe zones

Yeah, you think Chinese carrier group is scared of Filipino's Brahmos, and American carrier is nowhere to be seen.

200 nm, very close to the shore of Filipin, giving an unmistakable threatening message now to the Pinoys for their long time provocations to Chinese islands or reefs in SCS.
American have 5 airbases and 4 Naval bases in Philippines. Chinese won't even know what, hit them. They don't necessarily need an aircraft carrier to defend Philippines.

Chinese aircraft carrier won't even get to know, what hit them, if this muscle flexing were to ever go south.

Lol, why then didn't the American missiles hit Chinese Coast Guards when they fought and arrested the Filipino navy special force couple weeks ago in SCS, after all they have mutual defense treaty. Nobody worship their masters the way you Indians do with the Yankees.

The same is valid for all aircraft carriers
Yeah mostly.

They are almost useless against supersonic and hypersonic missiles.

But having the safety distance and supporting by group of ships, will increase the survival chances but roaming near the islands, as Chinese aircraft did, less than 10-20% for survival

As I said earlier, crunch time - will be operating from safe distance.

Example - Indian aircrafts carriers not being patrol near by Chinese lands or Pakistani lands, it will be have bigger role by operating safe distance from the enemy lands. Example - blocking route at choke points.

Roaming near by enemy lands can be done only well equipped navy ships, survival chances are much better.

So, Chinese carrier is in no way afraid of Filipin.

Stupid childish questions with no critical thinking on your part.

I can play stupid question game too like... Why china didn't defend itself when Type055 and J-16D were jammed as it tried to interfere with Pelosi' plane as it head to Taiwan? Why China claims all these waters but USN says challenge accepted and sails through chinese claim waters? Why so scared?

See how easy it is to play Stupid Childish Question With No Critical Thinking Game?

You make yourself sound intellectually limited when you make this post.
