Chinese tech giants take centre stage at MWC 2024 as they eye opportunities abroad

100 years ago, when the west brought modern technology and products to China, the then Chinese government strongly resist them.
Now when China brings modern technology and products to the west, the western governments strongly resist them.
History is repeating itself in an uncanny way.

Let’s travel a little in time: it is the year 2019, specifically the month of February, and they have already opened the doors of the most important mobile phone fair in the world, the Mobile World Congress. In the spacious halls of the fair we meet with many mobilesfrom different manufacturers and of different types, including the first foldingwhich at that time many did not imagine would become in a real trendabove all in some countries.

In 2019 We found brands like Sony, LG and more at the fair, which in the last edition of the most important mobile congress in the world, were conspicuous by their absence. The big stars of MWC 2024 are Chinese manufacturers, stealing the attention of all attendees with folding screens, devices with incredible cameras and even an electric car. The MWC has changed, and probably will forever.

China has conquered the MWC, and it is something that has been happening for several years

Things have changed considerably in the world of mobile phones in recent years. It is a market that, although brands such as Apple and Samsung continue at the top in market share figures worldwide, Chinese manufacturers have managed to establish themselves as increasingly popular alternatives, as is the case in Spain, where Xiaomi is currently the best selling brand.

And I’m not just referring to well-known and renowned brands like Xiaomi and OPPO, but also to other players who are beginning to make an important place for themselvesas is the case of Transsion (responsible for the Tecno brand), which has positioned itself as the fifth manufacturer with the most sales worldwide.

At MWC 2024 we did not see Sony, a brand that used to participate in each edition of the Mobile World Congress, announcing new smartphones from both more accessible and more premium ranges. This year the absence of LG was also felt again, a company that stopped manufacturing mobile phones in 2021.

This year, when touring the mythical Hall 3 of the fair, where some of the biggest brands meet each year, it was starred by Chinese brands: Xiaomi, Honor and ZTE were just a few; There was even the presence of China Mobile, one of the most important operators in the Asian country.

Everyone at MWC 2024 wanted to see Xiaomi’s electric car, one of the most important products at the fair

In fact, the product that has been talked about the most this Mobile World Congress has been from Xiaomi, and It’s not even a mobile phone, but a car: the SU7, the first electric car from the company, which has big plans to enter the mobility market. Basically, There was no one who did not want to know the Xiaomi car.

Everyone wanted to see Xiaomi’s car.

The prominence of Chinese manufacturers at the MWC is a trend that has only grown in recent years. We could say that this began in the middle of the last decade, with brands like Huawei and Xiaomi gaining more and more weight in the Spanish market and throughout Europe since then, with proposals that offered great value for money on interesting mobile phones with good performance.

And although Xiaomi has also been betting on a more premium segment for some years, as is the case this year with the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, the brand has established itself as one of the most important and popular on the market.

This year, we were able to see some very interesting devices at the Mobile World Congress. Motorola, for example, brought a rollable mobile in 2023 to the Fira de Barcelona, and this year they have upped the ante with a mobile phone that can be folded and used as a bracelet. On the other hand, its parent company, Lenovo, has brought a laptop with transparent screen.

TCL (another Chinese manufacturer) brought its new mobile phones and tablets to MWC, some of them with the interesting NXTPaper technology which allows you to simulate the viewing experience of an e-ink screen to a normal screen. OPPO, for its part, announced that it will once again bring its most powerful mobile phones, the OPPO Find X, to Spain and the rest of Europe. Meanwhile, Honor and Xiaomi brought their respective new mobile candidates with the best camera on the markethe Honor Magic6 Pro and the Xiaomi 14 Ultra.

Two of the candidates for best camera of the year were part of the MWC: the Xiaomi 14 Ultra and the Honor Magic6 Pro

The manufacturer TECH It also presented very interesting terminals and a proposal based on artificial intelligence: the Dynamic 1, a robotic dog that looks like a German shepherd. And speaking of artificial technology, this year we were also able to test proposals such as Humane’s AI Pin, and my colleague Ricardo is clear after testing him: This device is not going to replace the smartphonefalls short as an alternative.

Finally, Samsung also had an interesting participation in the Mobile World Congress, especially taking into account that it is one of the “old” companies that continue to form an important part of the Fira de Barcelona every year. This time, the company took folding screen prototypes and your smart ringwhich they presented for the first time during Galaxy Unpacked in which they also announced the Galaxy S24 family.

The Samsung Galaxy Ring is already at MWC 2024: you look at it, but (for now) you don't touch it
The Samsung smart ring was one of the most interesting devices of this Mobile, although no one could touch it. It weighs less than three grams and is aimed at monitoring the user’s health, including sleep monitoring and what Samsung calls the user’s “vitality points.” The Galaxy Ring is expected to go on sale sometime this year.

In short, it has been a more than interesting Mobile World Congress, featuring mobile phones with impressive cameras, foldable and transparent screens, and more innovative proposals, many of them presented by manufacturers from China. And with the return of OPPO’s top of the line to Europe, this trend will only grow.

Western media is still brainwashing their people into believing that China can only copy and paste and make cheap shoddy gadgets. In PDF we see many western and Indian posters ranting this phrase again and again. and they insist that we Chinese are close minded , isolated and have no clue of what's really going on in today's world.
