BISHKEK: Kyrgyzstan on Thursday said that negotiations for the construction of the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway is in the final stage in Beijing.

Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers Akylbek Japarov, during a board meeting at the Ministry of Education and Science, announced the significant progress on the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway project.

Japarov said that the construction on the project will commence this year, estimating the cost of the railway construction on Kyrgyzstan’s territory to be between $7-8 billion.

He expressed confidence in overcoming previous obstacles, citing the completion of all feasibility studies and the near completion of negotiations.

Furthermore, Japarov highlighted advancements in the construction of the first stage of the Kambar-Ata-1 Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP), which is also set to be completed this year. He emphasized Kyrgyzstan’s self-reliance in building access roads, construction camps, bridges, and tunnels, with full support from the World Bank for the project.

Moreover, Japarov mentioned the ongoing construction of 50 small hydropower plants and the upcoming launch of solar and wind power plants within the year.

The China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway will be built within five years, Azernews reports.

Zhaparov recalled that the implementation of this major project has already begun. Kyrgyzstan is at a dead end and is not connected by transit routes to China's billion-dollar market.

"Prospects will open up after the completion of the railway construction. According to our estimates, it will be built within the next five years," he said.

The length of the route will be over 450 km, which will connect the railways of China and Uzbekistan through the territory of Kyrgyzstan, and then pass through Turkmenistan, Iran and Turkiye. It will connect these countries with the European railway network as part of the New Silk Road transport system (Eurasian Land Bridge).

The cost of building a railway line through the territory of Kyrgyzstan is estimated at $ 1.34 billion. Since Kyrgyzstan does not have its own sources of financing for this highway, it is assumed that the construction will be carried out with the money of the Chinese side. The specified cost of the project is about $ 8 billion.
