It's a surprise that most people believe only substantial products need customs protection, while information products don't. Any protection policy for information products would be described as "limiting people's freedom" by USA. USA is too successful in brainwashing people. On the other hand, when Chinese information products like Tiktok gained market share in USA, USA itself tries to block them.

Thank to the free trade of information products, there are only two countries that have independent IT industry. USA and China. Both have strong will to protect their domestic IT industry. EU and Japan has quit from the match because they believe the "free access to world internet".

Many people mocked China's firwall. But if there weren't firewall and Chinese rely on Google softwares as much as others outside China do, do you know what would happen when US government prohibited Huawei to use American softwares? Huawei's phone sale will immediately become zero in China. If Huawei is bankrupt, China's high tech industries and morale will be serously hit. Today you will not see Huawei's cutting edge technologies in car self driving, 6G, chips(especially GPU), HarmonyOS... More upstream Chinese parts suppliers will close.

China's firewall not only helped Chinese IT industy to become one of two world major players. Also helped China to maintain its world factory title even US tries so many measures to force US and its pawns' companies to move out China.

Of course, firewall did bring many inconveniences to Chinese people. But it is totally worth it.

The media is the most powerful weapon in the West's arsenal to maintain global domination and to implode challengers from within. Nobody would let an American politician or soldier into their living room to spread propaganda, but American media makes its way into hundreds of millions of living rooms and children's bedrooms around the world.

The media-as-a-weapon works best against democracies because it is easy to topple unfriendly governments by media puppeteering, but it can also work in non-democratic countries by promoting opportunistic rebels.

Also, as the OP points out, Western governments have no qualms about censoring media which they find unacceptable, so this charade of the 'free world' has been unmasked.
