JAKARTA - Indonesia and Australia hope to sign a "very significant" defence cooperation agreement within the next few months, Australian defence minister Richard Marles said on Friday after meeting his counterpart in Jakarta.

"Australia and Indonesia have a shared destiny and a shared collective security and that is the basis on which we are moving forward," Marles said after meeting Indonesian defence minister Prabowo Subianto.

In a joint statement, Prabowo, Indonesia's likely next president following the Feb.14 election, hailed the good relationship and said the two countries were destined to be good neighbours.

Neither minister provided details about the agreement but Prabowo said he expected it would be signed within two or three months. REUTERS

In the press confrence I see from Indonesian side is Prabowo Subianto (Minister of Defense, President Elect), Meutya Hafid (Chairman of Commission 1 (Defense and Security matter) in Parliament), Agus Subiyanto (Armed Force General), Tito Karnavian (Minister of Home Affair)

Australia will probably outsource some part of stopping illegals boat arrivals to Indonesia. Maybe pay Indonesia to act as a wingman in dealing with Oceania nations.

In the broader global context, Australia takes its orders from Washington so not sure where Indonesia sits in that equation.

Indonesia has a worry of Western nation to attack Indonesia some day from Australia land. When Darwin become US military base, we were protesting ( SBY administration ).

This is I think to make sure this probability will not happen in the future, thus make Indonesia feel more secure.

Australia on the other side worry Indonesia possible invasion, this pact will also serve Australia interest. Beside that, by having military cooperation with Indonesia, Aussie will also feel more secure from China threat.

Exactly.

Australian media is very anti-Muslim and anti-Indonesia so I don't even understand this 'defence pact'.

Unlike Middle East or European countries treating each other, Indonesia since Soeharto period seek regional stability and wants to have strong relationship with its neigbor that in the end will help preserving peace and improve economic development.

ASEAN Head Quarter is in Jakarta for example, it shows we want to keep this SEA cooperation stronger and we want to be the main force of ASEAN unity and stability.

When it comes to Aussie, we know Aussie has strong relationship with Superpower like USA. In the mind of Indonesian, by considering Indonesia is large and powerful country in the region, it then only consider both USA and China as the main threat. Making strong defense cooperation with Aussie is Indonesia interest.

So we want to have region that comprise of nations with very strong relationship with us. In the end, it will make both Indonesia and Australia stronger, so of course it serves interest of both nations.

Until the details of the defense pact are known to the public, we can't say how significant/insignificant is this pact.
