WAPDA

Greater Karachi Bulk Water Supply Scheme (K-IV Project) project.

Scheduled completion of K-IV is linked with timely availability of funds:

K-IV Project envisages to provide 650 million gallon per day (MGD) to Karachi from Keenjhar lake. The project will be completed in two phases. At present, WAPDA is constructing Phase-I, which is scheduled for completion in October 2024. Phase-I of K-IV Project will supply 260 MGD to Karachi. PC-I cost of the project is Rs 126 billion, expenditure till date is Rs.40 billion and accumulative progress of 40% has been achieved.

The Chairman visited in detail several sites of the project and witnessed construction work going on there. The project team briefed the Chairman about the progress achieved so far. It was briefed that construction activities are continuing on all eight sites of the project. These sites include intake structure, pumping stations, water conveyance system consisting of pressurized pipes, reservoirs and filtration plants, project offices, colony and the approach road. The status relating to provision of the funds through Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) was reviewed in detail during the briefing. Besides, the issues about augmentation of water distribution system to be done by the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) and the power component to be arranged by the Sindh Government, also came under discussion.

K-IV is a project of immense importance for Karachi. WAPDA is striving hard to complete this project in accordance with the schedule. The Chairman maintained that scheduled completion of the project is, however, linked with timely provision of the funds. He said that arrangement of the power component and augmentation of the water distribution system as per the plan are also equally important, so that the people of Karachi could benefit from the project. He directed the project management to keep close liaison with all stakeholders for completion of K-IV Project as early as possible.

The Supreme Court has ordered that the 17-acre Askari Park be returned to the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC).

The petition concerning Askari Park was heard on Monday at the Supreme Court Karachi Registry before a bench led by Chief Justice of Pakistan Gulzar Ahmed and comprised of Justice Qazi Muhammad Amin Ahmed.

The counsel represented the Army’s Five Corps. He claimed that in 2001, the vegetable market was relocated. Under Musharraf, a plea was made to repair the park. “According to the deal, the park was given to the defence agency.” According to the news, marriage halls have been shuttered.”

The park was entrusted to the army for non-occupation, according to the chief justice. “You have been tasked with protecting the entire country of Pakistan.” “Did you get a park for commercial purposes?” inquired the CJP.

A new and unknown world of mass transit opened up for Karachiites as the Green Line bus service became fully operational on Monday. As many as 80 buses could be spotted moving towards Surjani Town from Numaish and the other way around from 7am till 10pm.

For now one can get tickets in two ways one of which is going to the ticketing booth and pay Rs55 for a ticket for whether you are travelling to the station ahead or to all 22 stations. But another better and economical way is to buy a Rs100 card which can be topped up. As you reach a station to get off, the machines there will deduct your fare as per kilometer of your traveling.
