Korean vs Japanese vs Chinese Languages! Can They Understand Each Other?!

Personally, I think Japanese is very similar to Ainu who are from the Khabarovsk area which is where Native Americans came from, so Japanese and Native American are similar. Korean is more like Mongolian and Manchu (Jurchen).

In any country, I tried to pick up the language and at least command a rudimentary Korean to get by.

One expect a language to be similar in that region of the world.

I was surprised, stunned actually, to find Korean in speech most similar to Cantonese (I an ethnic Cantonese) . One would have thought Korean speech to be more closely related to Manchurian or Beijing (actually called Mandarin)

In Korea when I was in doubt to a place, I found by wording that place name in Cantonese, korean folks seemed to know and would direct me there.

Then I thought must be due to migration. That perhaps at one time, Cantonese speaking people were at Manchuria region just next to Korea.

Vast land mass of China allowed the Cantonese to go on south, but Korea did not have that option. Ended up trapped in Korean Peninsula , but retaining speech of Cantonese.

And Cantonese went on to more than Canton, or Guangzhou as said in Mandarin (or rather Beijing hua aka Beijing dialect)
But that another story.

I was working and living in Taiwan for a long time. And there I have this very good American friend that we travelled often together.

Into Japan.

He could speak rudimentary Japanese

And I could recognise enough of Chinese characters.

And we got to many places in Japan via our combined skills.

I known Japanese understand Chinese characters very well. A Japanese showed me a legal Japanese contract, and that contract was written entirely in kanji, or han ji, or CHinese characters to avoid any legal misunderstanding.

So to get to a place, I squiggled that name in chinese character, and with my American friend (good Americans are called American, as agains the nasty lying evil Muricans) voicing Japanese, we both got directed to the places we wanted to go.

Japanese is also quite similar to Cantonese as well.

Most of foreigner doesn't know about East Asia.

Simply speaking, there are three countries in East Asia, China, Japan, and Korea.

But the truth is far more complex.

China is an empire, a unified people of East Asia, there are so many tribes and dialects in China.

Japan and Korea positions are equal to one of the tribes in China.

Comparing China with Japan and Korea is like comparing a basket full of oranges (that foreigner think as one orange) with two oranges.

Korean has many ancient Chinese pronunciations, and Japanese has Chinese characters.

Exactly. For example. Hyundai is bastardized Xian Dai from Chinese, Kia is bastardized Qi Ya from Chinese.

Personally, I like Japanese the best. It is the most elegant of the 3.

Not quite. Korea isn't 1 country. There's North Korea and South Korea.
