North Korea said it conducted its first flight test of a new type of cruise missile this week, calling it the "strategic" Pukguksong-3. South Korea's military detected the launch of several cruise missiles into waters off the North's western coast on Wednesday.

Cruise missiles allow North Korea to deliver nuclear weapons without having to use long-range ballistic missiles, expanding its strike capabilities. The test comes as tensions are high following a series of North Korean missile launches.
