ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan’s independent human rights commission said Monday there is little chance of free and fair parliamentary elections in the country next month because of “pre-poll rigging.” It also expressed concern about authorities rejecting the candidacies of former Prime Minister Imran Khan and most other members of his party.

At a news conference in Islamabad, the co-chairperson of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, Munizae Jahangir, said other political parties have been subjected to similar tactics to varying degrees.

“At this point, there is little evidence to show that the upcoming elections will be free, fair or credible," Jahangir said.

She said Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, or PTI, was “being dismembered in a systematic manner” and that the rejection of nomination papers for most of its candidates raised questions about the country's Election Commission.

People should be allowed to vote for their candidate of choice on February 8, she added, and there are “apprehensions that the electoral process is being engineered."

Jahangir condemned the state’s “clampdown” on dissent, saying it has further constricted civic discourse at a time when Pakistanis should be allowed to express their views freely given the upcoming election.

Farhatullah Babar, a veteran human rights leader, said the Election Commission's decisions keeping Khan and other PTI members off the ballot amounted to "apparent pre-poll rigging.”

He said Pakistan's caretaker government has a duty to ensure free and fair elections and the Election Commission's is responsible for providing all political parties equal opportunities.

Some of the country's main parties would not accept the outcome of a rigged election, and a disputed vote would create further political instability, Babar warned.

Khan is in currently in prison and serving a three-year sentence for corruption. He also faces a stack of other charges, making it difficult for him to run for office. Despite knowing his nomination papers could be rejected, Khan through his legal team sought to run for a seat in the National Assembly.

According to election officials, Khan was barred from running because of his conviction.

His disqualification was a fresh blow for the 71-year-old former cricketer, who is the country’s most popular opposition figure. He was ousted from office in April 2022 following a no-confidence vote in Parliament by his political opponents.

Well Pakistani People by nature are not ones that like Conflict

However people of Pakistan must realize that they must stand up their own human Rights and Rights as Pakistani Citizen

The country cannot sustain itself with falling currency for very long and with current state of Human Rights Violation it is a grim situation ahead

As Pakistani We have right to Vote for Political Party of our choice
Without interference from External processes

External Interference : (Anti Democratic Steps)
  • Kidnapping Candidates
  • Keeping people in Prison for Bogus cases, releasing from one and retaken in another
  • Kidnapping of People who witnessed the signature of Election Candidate papers.
  • Stealing of Candidacy papers from some people who went in person to submit their papers
  • Threats to Political members of party to leave party or else their families will be persecuted.

The Latest move by ECP for not approving 90% of Candidates of PTI is yet another example of political Rigging unseen in Pakistani Politics in past.

It's mainly internal, had been since the very first Prime Minister, unfortunately Jinnah's message to the chowkidars to stay inside their barracks, unless called for, fell in deaf ears. Not the country our founder invisioned for us, neither do we want to be part of this cruel experiment, alas "might beats right."

There is some issue with Setup indeed in Pakistan

Typically, in US or other nations the Army normally is quite nonpolitical. I am really amazed by the the power of Congress above the US military officials.

It's really a case study

Even in India Military is generally under congress over there too

  • However what we are seeing Today in Pakistan is beyond what anyone has ever witnessed in Pakistan

Those are sovereign countries, unlike Pakistan which is occupied by mercenaries in uniform who devoid themselves from their constitutional constraints at their own leisure.

The only difference I see is USA Army, won their freedom and army was made of citizens of country.

Meanwhile Pakistani Army which was inherited came from a colonial system (Colonial India). The training and mindset perhaps is what is different., while country became free independent the Mind set from colonial era never changed.

Most Soldiers in US don't see themselves above other citizens It's an ideological flaw in Pakistan Army Ranks

Police is Lost cause write off

It's really strange because the foot soldiers in Army are mostly from poor background that guard the borders. Very humble folks

Pakistanis do not have right to vote for leaders nilly willy. You can not vote a 5 yo as President or PM. Similarly you can not vote a zakat chor, Pakistan hater who incited riots on 9 May as PM.

Human Rights Watch should look at human rights abuses done under PTI regime first.

They finally woke up after two years

Always has been. I find the last 6 months though incredible. A man supposedly so ill he has to live in a flat in London bought by Pakistan people’s money - suddenly flying back - having his court case quashed put back in charge?
BTW glad you could finally make it bro

Platelet count increased Acha what people don’t understand is Justice ESA raised a valid point in todays hearing. If lifetime ban is approved that would automatically disqualify NS and a host of other present hopefuls too, so in my assessment they are trying to go down the route if 5 year ban.
