Plans to start the first government funded air ambulance in Punjab have been drafted for review before policy commission. The ambulance service will initially run a trial service in what are deemed "high-risk" areas following a mass casualty incident or to expedite transport of critically ill patients where transport by road would be detrimental.

The tender for the "pilot scheme" which was announced in March by Rescue 1122 is estimated to cost the public purse 440 Million PKR. The duration of the pilot scheme will last for 1 year and as per my sources the tender has already been awarded to a company based out of Islamabad [but due to legal reasons I will not mention here]

Interestingly the inital plan includes two fixed wing aircraft and the joint use of the CM's helicopter for rescue missions, the proposed bases that have been considered include Rawalpindi and Mianwali for the North and Multan or Bahawalnagar in the south.

Govt. Of the Punjab has already leased the services of x1 Cessna 402 Utiliner reg AP-BHS which is presently privately operated in Pakistan as a critical patient air ambulance.

Readers should note that Govt of the Punjab had the use of an Mi-17 registration AP-BGX which was used by Rescue 1122 previously- this helicopter crashed in Afghanistan in 2016 whilst en route to Russia for overhaul.

Govt. of Punjab also has access to the following helicopters which are either wholly owned by the Govt or on lease basis by M/S Askari Aviation, Princely Jets Ltd and PakAirAmbulance Ltd.

Eurocopter EC130 B4 - Registration AP-BKH [this helicopter is owned by M/S Princely Jets Pakistan - but is leased on Govt. Of Punjab]

It is interesting that the Govt. of Punjab have decided to go with fixed wing over rotary wing aircraft for the air ambulance pilot. I will withhold my judgement until we have more information.
