ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Monday clarified that no final decision had been taken yet to strip PTI Chairman Imran Khan of his party post, maintaining that the matter would be decided after legal consultations.
A meeting of the election supervisor was held under chairmanship of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja, which was attended by its officials and members.

During the meeting, attendees assessed the aftermath of the court's ruling on the PTI chief's sentencing in the Toshakhana reference. The discussion also centered around the legal permissibility of his continued role as party chairman following the conviction.

The electoral oversight body noted that no final decision had been taken until now to strip the PTI chief of his party position, adding that they would decide the matter after legal consultations.

An accountability court in Islamabad on Wednesday dismissed former prime minister Imran Khan’s interim bail in Toshakhana case.

Accountability Court Judge Muhammad Bashir announced the verdict on the former premier’s plea he reserved earlier. The court order stated that irregularities were found during the investigation of the Toshakhana case.

The court said that Imran Khan will remain and interrogated in prison. Following the order, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) also arrested the former prime minister, who is already imprisoned in cypher case.

Deputy Prosecutor NAB Sardar Mazhar Abbasi has said the bureau would obtain physical remand of Imran Khan in the case tomorrow.

Imran’s counsel Naeem Haider Panjutha complained about dismissing the bail plea at 8pm, terming it a “spectacle”.

The Toshakhana is a state department which retains gifts given by state officials, foreign diplomats and heads of different governments. According to the Constitution of Pakistan, the recipient of the gifts must report them to the cabinet division and pay an appropriate amount if the said recipient wants to keep it personally.

In August, Imran was arrested and sent to Attock jail hours after a trial court in Islamabad sentenced him to three years in prison while imposing on him a fine of Rs100,000 for making false declarations about his assets to the polls supervisory body, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

What can one say?

Every institution has been subverted to sideline a political party.

This subjugation of institutions leaves a long lasting scar.

Artificial intelligence allowed former prime minister Imran Khan to campaign from behind bars with a voice clone of his giving an impassioned speech on his behalf during a virtual PTI rally.

Imran has been in jail since August. He is being tried for leaking classified documents, allegations he says have been trumped up to stop him from contesting general elections due on February 8.

But the PTI used artificial intelligence to make a four-minute message from the 71-year-old, headlining a “virtual rally” hosted on social media overnight on Sunday into Monday despite internet disruptions.

The PTI said Imran sent a shorthand script through lawyers which was fleshed out into his rhetorical lingo.

The text was then dubbed into audio using a tool from AI firm ElevenLabs, which boasts the ability to create a “voice clone” from existing speech samples.

“My fellow Pakistanis, I would first like to praise the social media team for this historic attempt,” the voice mimicking Imran said.

“Maybe you all are wondering how I am doing in jail,” the stilted voice adds. “Today, my determination for real freedom is very strong.

“Our party is not allowed to hold public rallies,” Imran said in the clip, urging supporters to turn out in large numbers during the general elections. “Our people are being kidnapped and their families are being harassed,” he said.

The audio was broadcast at the end of a five-hour live stream of speeches by PTI supporters on Facebook, X (formerly Twitter) and YouTube, and was overlaid with historic footage of the former prime minister and still images.

It was bookended with genuine video clips from the former cricketer’s previous speeches according to the PTI, but a caption appeared at intervals flagging it as the “AI voice of Imran Khan based on his notes”.

“This was a no-brainer for us when Imran Khan is no longer there to actually meet at a political rally,” said US-based PTI social media chief Jibran Ilyas. “It was to get over the suppression.”

PTI was the first political party in the country to widely harness the potential of social media, using apps to target younger audiences who carried them to power five years ago.

“We wanted to get in election mode,” Ilyas told AFP. “No PTI political rally is complete without Imran Khan.”

Global network monitor NetBlocks said social media was restricted for seven hours starting late on Sunday in an incident “consistent with previous instances of internet censorship” targeting the PTI chief.

LAHORE:
Former prime minister Imran Khan on Monday urged party workers and the masses to prepare for the upcoming elections slated for Feb 8, asserting that the vote was their fundamental constitutional, legal, and democratic right.

In a message conveyed through the party's core committee, the ex-PTI chairman highlighted the sanctity of the electoral process. He urged citizens to safeguard their right to vote and ensure its secure exercise.

However, he cautioned his supporters against any attempts to compromise the transparency of the electoral proceedings.

The incarcerated leader’s statement came a day after the party held a virtual rally amid country-wide internet disruptions which, the supporters and the party alleged, was part of the ongoing crackdown to undercut PTI’s prospects to regain power.

Imran has been in prison since August on charges of leaking classified documents. He claims these accusations were fabricated to prevent him from running in the upcoming general elections scheduled for February 8.

This will be a mother of all rigging.

Let’s hope PTI does its level best to expose the rigging as best they can.

Not like the public needs any convincing.

PTI-P to field candidates on 70pc seats in KP

Bureau Report
December 22, 2023

PESHAWAR: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf Parliamentarian (PTI-P) chairman Pervez Khattak said on Thursday his party was anticipating fielding candidates on 70 per cent of constituencies in the province.

Talking to reporters at his party’s secretariat in the provincial capital, Mr Khattak said that there was still time to file nomination papers for the upcoming polls and over the coming days ‘many changes’ were also imminent.

“Though I cannot say exactly but our candidates will contest elections on about 60 to 70 per
cent of seats in the province,” Mr Khattak said, adding this figure could even be on the higher side.

However, he said over the coming eight to 10 days, many things were likely to change, which could to make a big difference.

To a question, Mr Khattak said that they had also spoken to other parties regarding poll alliance. However, he added, he had empowered his party leaders to go for seat adjustment at local level with whomsoever they deemed fit.

“I cannot take these decisions and local chapters are well suited for the purpose. I am personally opposed to interfering in local affairs of the party,” Mr Khattak said.

To another question, Mr Khattak said that if his party’s candidates were elected as members of the National Assembly, they would preferably join a coalition government. However, Mr Khattak said that to join such a setup, he would present them with a set of demands regarding the province’s rights.

Mr Khattak said he would contest elections on three seats from his native Nowshera district including a National Assembly and two of provincial assembly seats.

On the occasion, Pakhtunkhwa Qaumi Movement Charsadda leaders announced to merge their party into the PTIP. Mr Khattak welcomed them into his party and said that they would help in bringing about a change in district politics.
