Key Takeaways

  • Finland ranked as the world’s freest country in 2025 with a perfect score of 100.
  • The U.S. fell to its lowest freedom score on record after one of its sharpest annual declines.
  • Europe dominates the top rankings, while the world’s least free countries are concentrated in Africa and Asia.

This graphic ranks the world’s most and least free countries using Freedom House’s 2026 Freedom in the World report, which evaluates political rights and civil liberties across 195 countries and territories.

Finland topped the rankings with a perfect score of 100, followed by New Zealand, Norway, and Sweden at 99. Meanwhile, South Sudan scored 0, the lowest possible rating, highlighting the widening divide between the world’s strongest democracies and most repressive regimes.

Why Europe Dominates the Freedom Rankings

Europe accounts for most of the world’s highest-scoring countries, led by the Nordics and Western Europe. Strong electoral systems, independent courts, press freedom, and protections for civil liberties helped countries like Finland, Sweden, Germany, and the Netherlands rank near the top globally.

There are two European outliers with low scores out of 100: Belarus (7) and Russia (12). Both are run by repressive autocratic regimes that have been in power for over two decades. The two Eastern European countries feature neither press independence nor free and fair elections, and rank among the least free countries worldwide.

What’s the point of Western countries constantly making these kinds of rankings? It’s completely self-indulgent. See? In the current mainstream Western aviation rankings, the Rafale and the Typhoon are still ranked above the J-10C. Can you imagine that?

The same goes for today’s world university rankings. Oxford, Cambridge, and some European universities are ranked far above Chinese universities, but what actual research output do they have? What can Oxford and Cambridge do besides cosplay?

Today’s Europe is like a group of middle-aged women waving their arms and shouting every day, “I’m important! I’m important!” But the truly powerful just sneer at it.

Why is OP parading this? Trump supporters like him are incredibly hostile to the social democrat framework that most european countries follow

Japan doesn't even control airspace over the capital.
U.S. President Trump has to declare that he is not controlled by Netanyahu, and he is calling the shoot.

USA and Japan are two examples of the least free countries.

no such thing as real "freedom" in any country, in current world. Everyone is tied or forced to something....

Almost every country controlled by the WEF, zionist and western(local) slaves

Wanna test freedoms?
try saying something against your military, or govt openly.....how about stop paying property taxes, see what happens to your "freedom",

Yes, I can. Why would J-10 be ranked higher than the Rafale and Typhoon? Who else operates the aircraft besides China and Pakistan?

And for good reasons. The US economy is more robust, more innovative, and more competitive than the EU's. Another reason is that the US carries the burden of defending Europe. It's easy to have more freedom when you have outsourced your defense to others.

“The U.S. is still defending Europe? You’re overthinking it. Today’s America, under the Trump administration, has already put Europe on the menu. Europe is chewy, juicy, delicious, and doesn’t even have bones.”

Europe soon to be chewed up by Russia……nobody will defend it….
