Anduril, a startup fashioning itself as a new-age defense tech and weapons maker, has created a product dubbed Roadrunner that it bills as an answer to the US’s rising drone threat - developed in secret over the past two years. Anduril founder and Oculus creator Palmer Luckey joins Ed Ludlow and Caroline Hyde on "Bloomberg Technology."

Malicious actors are increasingly using state-owned and commercially-available drone technology to threaten the personnel, infrastructure, and assets of the United States and our allies around the world. Anduril Industries has built a family of systems to counter such threats — and we’re thrilled to welcome the newest addition to that family: Roadrunner.

Roadrunner is a modular, twin-jet powered autonomous air vehicle with extraordinary performance at low cost. Vertical takeoff and landing capability gives Roadrunner the flexibility to rapidly launch from and safely return to any location, pairing high subsonic speed with exceptional agility and stability.

Roadrunner-M is a high-explosive interceptor variant of Roadrunner for ground-based air defense that can rapidly identify, intercept and destroy an array of aerial threats, including large aircraft that are up to 100 times more expensive, or be safely recovered and reused at near-zero cost.

Roadrunner and Roadrunner-Munition (Roadrunner-M) is an operationally-assessed and validated capability that is ready to deploy today.

Commercial, off the shelf drones continue to evolve in complexity and threaten military and civilian safety & disrupt operations. Anduril's counter drone system autonomnously identifies, detects and defeats small drones.

Sentry Tower identifies threats using long range radar & AI processing.
Lattice OS uses computer vision, machine learning & real-time data to provide essential operational information .
Anvil provides a kinetic option to intercept drone threats.

@HRK Do you see the Roadrunner getting procured by militaries in large numbers?

It's a solid weapon and opens up new attack methods. The issue is when it returns home and the 'home' is targeted with rival drones and missiles.

It is not the first line of defence against weapons like cruise missiles. The job of protecting the "home" is of the air defence systems. This will mainly be used as a drone killer.

Few observations which may be totally wrong:

Utility of roadrunner system depends on many factors like maximum speed, service celling range etc.

Let suppose a target which is a highly maneuverable fighter jet flying at high subsonic or supersonic seed at 30 thousand or above feet would you prefer a system which have to chase that jet with its subsonic speed thus allowing the target jet to have extra time for it's mission and to out maneuver the Road runner at its will ???

Or would you prefer a missile flying at mach 4 to to target that incoming fighter jet ???

Even if supposedly roadrunner system is used against subsonic Drones than it will have limited utility because of its limited range and on station time, therefore subsonic Drones which usually have long endurance can force the roadrunner system to land back at its base.
