U.S. does not support Taiwan independence, Biden says

WASHINGTON, Jan 13 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden said on Saturday the United States does not support the independence of Taiwan, after Taiwanese voters rebuffed China and gave the ruling party a third presidential term.

Earlier in the day, the Taiwanese ruling Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP) presidential candidate Lai Ching-te came to power, strongly rejecting Chinese pressure to spurn him, and pledged both to stand up to Beijing and seek talks.

"We do not support independence..." Biden said, when asked for reaction to Saturday's elections.

The United States switched diplomatic recognition from Taipei to Beijing in 1979 and has long said it does not support a formal declaration of independence by Taiwan. It does, however, maintain unofficial relations with the self-governed island and remains its most important backer and arms supplier.

Beijing, which has never renounced the use of force to bring Taiwan under its control, fears that Lai could declare the establishment of a Republic of Taiwan, which Lai has said he will not do.

Biden has previously upset the Chinese government with comments that appeared to suggest the United States would defend the island if it were attacked, a deviation from a long-held U.S. position of "strategic ambiguity".

His comments on Saturday appear to be an effort to reassure Beijing.

Even so, Washington warned just hours ahead of the polls opening that "it would be unacceptable" for "any" country to interfere in the election.

The US lies.

This is just to bide time given the US's attention is bogged down in Ukraine and Israel.

Furthermore, I would say the US couldn't care less about Taiwanese independence.

It will use Taiwan sure, but to ultimately deny China's ascent.

Although I am not Chinese, I support Chinese reunification. There needs to be alternatives to USA and China is one of them.

Taiwan still claims all of mainland belongs to Taiwan so.

Rules based order is broke as the last 3 months have shown.

A complete and utter sham.

Perhaps a strong China as a competitor to the "West" isn't such a bad thing?

That's exact what BRICS is all about. Giving the global south a voice that can be heard.

This is all Taiwan's biggest "ally" has to say to Taiwan.
In diplomacy, you need to read the words carefully.

US does not support Taiwan independence.

Does that mean US oppose Taiwan independence?

This is nothing new. It is part of the 1979 agreement..as usual the Chinese here don't know any facts.

Key Summary Points

The American Institute of Taiwan had outlined 9 core summary points in the 1979 agreement between the United States and China.

1. The US recognized that the Government of the People’s Republic of China as "the sole legal Government of China", and it acknowledged the Chinese position that "there is but one China and Taiwan is part of China". Additionally the US would continue to maintain cultural, commercial and unofficial relations with Taiwan, and that the relationship between China and US were normalized

....

5. The US Government states that it "attaches great importance to its relation with China", and reaffirmed that it has "no intention of infringing on Chinese sovereignty and territorial integrity", or on interfering in the internal affairs of China, nor will it be pursuing a policy of “two Chinas” or “one China, one Taiwan.”

With this agreement China gave up taking Taiwan back by force and the US withdrew its troops from Taiwan.
