China hits back at Canada with fresh agriculture tariffs

I think we can grow soybeans in Xinjiang, and I believe there will soon be policies to encourage agricultural production.

That’s a misconception. What’s hightec semiconductor? what lowtec? If not about basic transistors and you look closer the difference is minimal.
Yes, rare earth is super important because is mostly used in magnet to make electromagnetic fields.
But from the news, Germany, Japan and others try to find other materials that capable to produce electromagnetic fields. So the rare earth monopoly China holds now may not last forever.
Should think in the long run.

Of course. There is no chip that is always effective. It is only a matter of time for Western countries to find substitutes for rare earth. are not so arrogant as to win the whole game with one chip.

China has many trump cards in hand, and rare earth and soybeans are just two of them, not all.

Soybeans are chosen because this card almost does no harm to China. Rare earth is chosen because this card has a very small impact on China, and only 1.2 billion of trade will be affected. China has no interest in playing cards like the US ban on chip trade and ship tax, which are very harmful to itself

China should not trade military grade REM for any US chips, nonnegotiable, put a rope on US military's neck. China will be able to make all chips in not long distant future.

The message from China is that it wants a year of fentanyl taxes in exchange for a year of soybean orders and a year of light rare earth. The ban on heavy rare earths needed for military goods remains in place.

As for chips, China has blocked the import of H20 chips, and the US has also banned the export of H100 chips. China's rare earth control measures also make it almost impossible for these chip companies to export. The future of these companies still needs to be further negotiated.

I believe that the US chip policy cannot affect the Chinese military. In the military field, there is no need for 3nm chips. It is only chips used in the civilian market. Of course, we also need to overcome the technological barriers and develop independently. Moreover, the latest news is that China has overcome the 5nm technology and stabilized the independent production of 7nm chips.

My Huawei phone is a 5-nanometer chip, which is only a step away from Qualcomm's 3-nanometer chip. The industrial advantage left for the West is not much. We will eventually win the industrial crown of chips.

Trump says he is looking to allow Nvidia and others to sell previously banned chips to China. So, he also says all REM problems are solved. Don't know if he lie or what the details.

Fentanyl taxes is only 10% reduction, that's not siginificant.

When people say a chip is 7 nm or 5 nm, they're not talking about an actual size anymore. Those names are more like a label for how advanced the chip is, how many transistors it can pack in, how fast it runs, and how much power it uses. To make a real 5 nm chip, you need newer tools like EUV lithography and other cutting-edge techniques that let you build smaller, more efficient transistors. And yes, you can make 7 nm chips using older DUV lithography, but it comes with serious drawbacks. DUV requires multiple patterning, which makes the process more complicated, expensive, and prone to defects. That also means lower yields, with fewer working chips produced from each batch.

After the China-US negotiation in May this year, the fentanyl tax was 20% on all goods, plus the basic tariff 10%. The actual tariff in the US reached 30%.

China's countermeasure tariff was the basic tariff of 10%, plus additional tax of 15% to 20% on American agricultural products, coal, oil, natural gas, agricultural machinery, etc. So the rate on the major exports of the United States is 25 to 30 percent. This is also why Chinese companies want not buy American soybeans(Brazil and Argentina's soybeans are zero tariff).

The result of negotiations at Malaysia was that China promised to buy some soybeans and the US reduced the fentanyl tax by 10%. Second round of negotiations, there will be more soybean orders and light rare earths in exchange for all the fentanyl taxes.

There is also a basic tariff of 10% that may to wait until the next round of trade war begins before it can be discussed.

My view is that the US does not have the courage to impose high tariffs on China, which would immediately and significantly increase inflation in the US, especially at time when Trump has been trying to cut interest rates to develop industry. And China does not want to hand over all its soybean orders to Brazil, causing US farmers to give up growing soybeans next year. Nor does it want to force Western countries to develop rare earth technology at all costs. China and the US will eventually make concessions, but other countries may caught in the trade war between the two countries.

China unveils outcomes of China-US economic, trade talks in Kuala Lumpur

Xinhua | Updated: 2025-10-30 15:06

BEIJING -- China's Ministry of Commerce on Thursday unveiled the outcomes achieved by Chinese and US delegations during their recent economic and trade talks in Kuala Lumpur.

The US side will cancel the 10-percent so-called "fentanyl tariffs" and suspend, for an additional year, the 24-percent reciprocal tariffs levied on Chinese goods, including goods from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the Macao Special Administrative Region, according to a spokesperson of the ministry.

China will make corresponding adjustments to its countermeasures against the aforementioned US tariffs, the spokesperson said, noting that both sides have agreed to continue extending certain tariff exclusion measures.

The United States will suspend for one year the implementation of a new rule announced on Sept 29 that expands its "entity-list" export restrictions to any entity that is at least 50 percent owned by one or more entities on the list. China will suspend the implementation of relevant export control measures announced on Oct 9 for one year and will study and refine specific plans, the spokesperson said.

The US side will suspend the implementation of measures under its Section 301 investigation targeting China's maritime, logistics and shipbuilding industries for one year. In response, China will correspondingly suspend the implementation of its countermeasures against the US side for one year once the US suspension takes effect, according to the spokesperson.

In addition, the two sides also reached consensus on issues including anti-drug cooperation on fentanyl, expanding agricultural product trade, and the handling of individual cases involving relevant enterprises, according to the spokesperson.

Both sides further confirmed the outcomes of the Madrid economic and trade talks. The US side made positive commitments in areas such as investment, and China will properly resolve issues related to TikTok with the US side.

The China-US economic and trade talks in Kuala Lumpur have yielded positive results, demonstrating that by upholding the spirit of equality, respect and mutual benefit, and through dialogue and cooperation, the two sides can find solutions to problems, the spokesperson said.

Noting that the outcomes are hard won, the spokesperson said China looks forward to working with the US side to jointly ensure the implementation of the outcomes, and inject more certainty and stability into bilateral economic and trade cooperation as well as the world's economy.

Trump: I was extremely honored by the fact that President Xi authorized China to begin the purchase of massive amounts of Soybeans, Sorghum, and other Farm products. Our Farmers will be very happy!Additionally, China has agreed to continue the flow of Rare Earth, Critical Minerals, Magnets, etc., openly and freely. Very significantly, China has strongly stated that they will work diligently with us to stop the flow of Fentanyl into our Country. They will help us end the Fentanyl Crisis. China also agreed that they will begin the process of purchasing American Energy. In fact, a very large scale transaction may take place concerning the purchase of Oil and Gas from the Great State of Alaska.

BEIJING/SINGAPORE, Oct 30 (Reuters) - China pledged to expand farm trade with the United States and President Donald Trump said Beijing would buy "tremendous" volumes of soybeans, but neither gave specifics, disappointing investors hoping for a return of its once-robust purchases.

Soybean Traders Underwhelmed by News of China’s First US Cargo Purchases

Updated on October 30, 2025 at 4:25 AM GMT+8

Soybean traders were underwhelmed by news of China’s first purchases of US cargoes this season, stepping back as they await details from a highly anticipated agreement between Beijing and Washington.

The purchase of at least two cargoes of US soybeans that’s said to be slated for delivery later this year could mark a revival of flows between the two nations. But the relatively small volume isn’t a game-changer, according to Illinois grower John Bartman. A handful of cargoes would be a drop in the bucket for a trade that was worth more than $12 billion last year.

"Rare earth issue has been settled," Trump said, adding that it was a 1-year agreement that will be negotiated every year.

However, Beijing's rare earths restrictions announced in early April still remain in place.

"China's leverage in rare earths and critical minerals processing will continue to surface episodically, effectively capping any escalation in bilateral tensions," Louise Loo, head of Asia economics at Oxford Economics, said in a note Thursday.
