I think Iranians suffer from the same cultural problems as many east asian countries, notably Koreans and Indians. They are either xenophobic, extremist, and racist, or they are so obsessed with emulating white western culture, that they never bother building something compatible to their homeland. They often end up selling out. Indians especially. That's why you see so many Indian Republicans try harder than whites to be gung ho Americans and emanate white culture. They marry white spouses and ditch their traditional names for white anglosaxon names, in order to curry favor (no pun intended) with traditional conservative white Americans.Iran's superstitious and individualistic/entitled people are not up to the task of developing these institutions or working for the common benefit.
Unfortunately, Iranians are a close 2nd place. Say what you want about Mullahs, but there really is some gharbzadegi embedded in our culture.
I just think the Mullah approach to this made it worse.
