‘Afghans no longer our guests’: interior minister vows full repatriation​

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Monday said the government was making every station house officer (SHO) of police responsible to arrest and repatriate the Afghan nationals living illegally within their jurisdiction.

Speaking to the media in Lahore, the interior minister stated that “Afghans were our guests, but they are not our guests anymore.”

Slamming the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government for failing to take decisive measures to repatriate Afghan nationals, he affirmed that Afghan nationals across the country would be sent back under all circumstances. He requested the Afghan citizens to respectfully return themselves.

Naqvi said that the three individuals who attacked the Frontier Corps a few days ago all turned out to be Afghans. He added that the attacker in the Islamabad Kachehri (court complex) was also an Afghan citizen, indicating that Afghans are involved in most of the attacks occurring in the country.

He said that the repatriation of illegal Afghan nationals across the country was underway. “We have to send back illegal Afghan refugees under all circumstances,” he stressed.

Minister Naqvi warned illegal Afghan refugees that if anyone was deported and returned, they would be arrested and punished. He also said that Afghan camps in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) were being shut down.

“We clearly know who is behind the terrorism and who is orchestrating it,” he stated, demanding the Afghan Taliban government to rein in the terrorists.

Naqvi pointed out that illegal Afghan nationals were being expelled from all three provinces, but they were being provided protection in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He asserted that politics was acceptable, but when it came to national security, no province could operate by creating its own policy.

He warned: “It cannot happen that you do whatever you want on the matter of national security. This will neither work nor will it be allowed.”

On media and fake news, the interior minister stated that 90 percent of the news on social media was incorrect. He emphasised that arbitrary publishing on social media cannot be allowed, and there would be a crackdown on false news.

He noted that Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) issued notices for false reporting on national media. He said those spreading false news were not journalists, and while freedom of expression existed, spreading fake news cannot be permitted.

Naqvi warned that they would not allow the humiliation of anyone on social media and that there would be no compromise on national security matters. He criticised those making baseless claims from abroad about institutional issues, stating, “If you have evidence, then definitely bring it forward.”

“I tell the people sitting outside that you will be coming back very soon. We will bring you here very soon, and you will have to answer for everything.”

In response to a question, the interior minister said that an amendment was made in the Constitution, under which a new institution was being created. He said that work did not happen with the press of a single button; the system took time to build.
