Dipu Das lynching: No evidence of religious insult, says RAB



There is no evidence that Dipu Chandra Das, the 27-year-old man who was beaten to death by a mob, had insulted Islam, Additional DIG Naimul Hasan, commander of Rab-14, has said.

Several workers at the factory accused Dipu of hurting religious sentiment and began quarrelling, said the commander of Rab-14, at a press briefing today (20 December).

"The floor manager, Alamgir, then forced Dipu to resign, and instead of calling the police, handed him over to a group of people who had also accused Dipu of insulting religion," he added.

"The men then beat him to death soon afterwards."

So far, police and Rab have arrested 10 suspects in the case filed by Dipu's brother Apu Chandra Das with Bhaluka Model Police Station on Friday (19 December) against some 150 unidentified individuals.

Naimul further said, "None of the arrested individuals is involved with any political party."

The arrestees are Tarek Hossain, 19, Manik Mia, 20, Ersad Ali, 39, Nijhum Uddin, 20, Alamgir Hossain, 38, Miraj Hossain Akon, 46, Azmal Hasan Sagir, 26, Shahin Mia, 19, Najmul, 20 and Limon Sarkar.

Dipu was killed on Thursday (18 December) by a group of people who said he had hurt their religious sentiments.

They then hung his body from the branch of a tree beside the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Bhaluka and set it on fire.

Dipu, son of Rabi Chandra Das of Mymensingh, was a worker at Pioneer Knitwear BD Limited.

People can be killed in the name of religion, and no one would bother to bat an eyelid. These are truly frightening times.

Poor guy was killed because he was fighting for workers' rights in the factory. I hope the govt at least compensate his family. I have no hopes of real killers or masterminds of organizing the mob getting caught.

People have stopped thinking critically unfortunately.

My fear is that the incidents which we are seeing over the past few days ever since the polls have been announced are not some random or organic incidents.

A deliberate, sinister attempt is being made to set BD on fire. The endgame is to embroil the whole of NE India, BD and Western Myanmar in chaos so that a Christian puppet state (the religion itself has nothing to do with it) can be carved out of CHT, NE, and Arakan/Chin Hills.

Although I am no fan of the IG, I think Prof Yunus administration and the Indian Govt are behaving as maturely as is possible under the circumstances.

Yes. Awami leaders overseas and under indian shelter (especially killer hasinas son joy) openly said on indian tvs that they'll do everything to stop the upcoming election in Bangladesh.

He is dead because religious fundamentalists r running rampat under this govt, and this terror gangs which this shambolic govt identifies as pressure groups r lynching people with inpuniy. There is no other way to see it.

It is the so called moderate shushils, along with incompetent law enforcement agencies, who only began raising their voices after realizing that this poor man, Dipu, did not commit any blasphemy, who have helped drag the country to its current state. Everyone should have protested the very moment a lynching occurred in the name of religion—not after discovering that the victim was innocent !

What if the man had actually insulted the Prophet SM? What would have been the reaction of those who are now screaming themselves hoarse demanding the harshest punishment for the perpetrators? Hundreds of people participated in that brutality, laughing and enjoying it like brainwashed militants who genuinely believe such acts r justified.

The reality is that action should have been taken much earlier, when illiterate mullah brigades dug up Nura pagla’s body, dragged it through the streets, and burned it to stoke theit religious sentiment. The govt remsined selent, and allowed zealots to operate openly, delivering sermons that incite ordinary people to take the law into their own hands over any perceived insult to the Prophet Muhammad SM or Islam.

By remaining passive on mob justice, especially when it carries religious justification, this govt has indirectly legitimized the use of religion as a weapon. That silence has empowered fundamentalists to terrorize people without consequence.
