JF-17 - Updates, News & Discussion

tbh guys id hold back lol, i think someone has been telling Reuters fibs
You know..., had it been of a number of News Agencies I would have said the same - especially with all the ones that have suddenly popped up on the .net of the years.

However, Reuters & AFP... When was the last time they published something off a tip.

Those guys are the gold standard of journalism and they wouldn't talk to just "someone".

I think it shows that they are a) looking to operationalise the mutual defence treaty with military capability b) are looking for a "workhorse" jet to do lower tier missions more cheaply than a big F15S can do c) buy into the JF17C ecosystem to develop home grown munitions which they can easily integrate themselves etc ie grown her local aviation industry.

The Saudi fleet is all Tier#1 and very expensive to operate. They are looking for something similar to what they had with F-5s when they were in the Saudi fleet?

btw - The Tornadoes are end of life btw, so they do need to replace the function of those jets with a platform. The UK has retired them, Germany is moving towards retirement as are Italy. Saudi have 81 of them to replace.

( I am still sceptical, but the above are some logical reasons why they may want to procure ).

We also have to think outside of the box

If the JF17s are indeed for the Saudis and not another state

They could be a tool that the Saudis can utilize without using Western weapons and incurring western angst

So if a ship needs to be taken out or ground targets hit, you can imagine if one of the Western platforms were used their may be issues or political backlash

This way the Saudis can keep their Western platforms for conflict or attack and utilize JF17 as a strings free option

100% this, we are so used to BS news from any outlet or person with an X account, we easily forget companies like Reuters have a reputation built up over 150 years and sets the standard globally. If they publish something you can damn well be assured it is more accurate then anything else online.

Actually something popped up in my head, perhaps these jets aren't intended for Saudis at all, they might supply them to the Sudanese airforce
That's what I thought as well. Saudis will likely be financing these deals for the Sudanese and possibly other clients or allies down the road

You’re absolutely right; there is a lot of garbage out there alongside some reliable sources, and Reuters is definitely one of the trustworthy ones. However, in this case, there is a twist. Reuters says, 'Pakistan, Saudi in talks on JF-17 jets-for-loans deal' which means they are still in negotiations and nothing is finalized yet. For now, it's better to take the news as it is and hope a deal comes of it, but it isn't a done deal yet.

Yeah, Azeris, Libyans, Sudanese etc will all need a massive upgrade in LIFT and modern air to air and air to ground tactics too. Not just a case of handing over Block IIIs and suddenly they have the capability.

Many of these nations never operated BVRs of targeting pods

this just also might be Saudis paying for paf squadron for themselves , like they pay for the jets and we send pilots and other support staff to be stationed in KSA .

I wonder if the potential order for Saudi will include a Chinese engine option? I can't see the Saudis operating anything of Russian origin. The Bangladeshis will probably stick to the RD93 given their experience with the Mig29, as did the Azeris I assume.

If this is a PAF run show (our instructors and ground engineers, possibly even our pilots), think they Saudis simply may not care.
