Another thing to add, not since the 70s/80s have we had a real "lightweight" fighter.
F-16, Gripen, Mirage 2000 and MIG-29 were more medium. No real true successor to F-5 and MIG-21/F-7 ever really materialised.
JF-17 is that plane.
What are those flags in the background? One of them is the Pakistani flag, and right next to it is the Joint Service flag. What are the other two flags, one on the extreme right and the other on the extreme left?View attachment 171820

Both JF17 and Tejas, FA/50, Gripen are competing for the lightweight fighter market. Tejas is now out of the running, so it is down to a 3 way fight for future contracts.
When you buy a FC1 Block III from China, you are basically buying a plane and you are pretty much left to your own devices on how to operationalise it, and anything not covered in the contract you pay a lot lot lot more for as a service, from China.
When you buy the JFC17C from Pakistan, you are also getting a long lived consultancy service on how to rebuild your airforce, end to end training from initial training to the JF17C itself, on site maintenance and extended support and training package that you won't get from China. I think that is why Pakistan has been more successful that China in attempting to sell the jet as the approaches are soo different from each other.
There's actually not a lot of options for countries who want a relatively affordable fast jet capability. Long gone are the days when we had thousands of Mig-21s/23s, Mirage IIIs/F1s, and F-5 Freedom Fighters.
The Gripen is relatively expensive for a lightweight fighter and has a US engine, no need to mention the tejus, and that only really leaves the JF17 as the realistic option for third world countries. The Russians don't produce a single engined fighter anymore and I think they also stopped Mig-29 production. For many countries the Viper is not an option for political and cost reasons, and the Rafale is overkill or too expensive.
In fact, the PAF has repeatedly marketed the aircraft as such, i.e. to replace legacy cold war fighter types, see the video below from Paris 2015. In addition, for the Chinese this has always been an export orientated project, something akin to the philosophy behind the F-5 series, i.e. a relatively low cost simple aircraft meant for developing countries. So for many countries, it's either the JF17 or nothing.
Yeah corrected, refresh the page.I think you linked the wrong video brotato
