AI models are beginning to solve complex mathematical problems, surprising even the world's leading scientists

Remember people were laughing at hallucinations in 2024 saying AI was useless. Now they aren't laughing as hard.

AI is definitely a force to be reckoned with...and it is only in its infancy

Funny, you mention this point. My younger brother was the same, being an accountant and working for the Big 4. Two weeks ago, the mood changed when his company began deploying AI tools, and a portion of his compensation is tied to the time he spends using them. He knows what's coming in the next few years, as he, too, can now foresee a cutback in the accounting and financial workforce.

Same experience with my other brother in a software programming now.

It is a force, and its effects will be felt in every industry.

By the way. The first person who will lose job in Ai is me. I was working for swiss people on crisis management system country wide. From attacks and natural disaster. We were doing sort of experiments to make ot good like flight radar etc but for attacks like cyber one. So i was tasked to make gui for monitoring live. Like ookla world map.

Anyway, i did it but with help of Ai i got even better result giving me even more lively radar. In just 5 hrs I had it ready.

By the way I am really good in ui design and have won 2nd in fast procom. Also did some projects via just css and html with js to make working nintendo switch that docks as well. If someone needs code ill share it.

Point is my development work is now 10 times faster. Both copilot and chat gpt free I use. If I dont adopt it ill lag behind. One way or another we will have to live with it.

i work in the financial industry..they went from dismissing AI as an unreliable joke to embracing it fully.

Elon Musk says things will get far worse.
Imagine a company as an excel spreadsheet where computers calculate each cell except for a few which are done by hand. Those done by human hand will always be seen as the weakest link..they will try their best to get a computer to do it instead.

that is foretelling that companies will soon see employees as the weakest link in their operation...doing their best to make sure AI does their job instead.

The brother who works for a large corporation as a software programmer said the same; these new tools enable the work of 10 employees under one manager. Basically, a lot of junior and below staff are out of the picture. This includes middle management, too. A major restructuring is underway in this sector.

He was lucky not to get cut last year when layoffs went crazy in the U.S., but he mentioned it's affected his state of mind, not in a good way, as he's constantly worried about when a notice will come.

many banks in Pak. have been working on unsupervised learning since 2019.
Further, JP Morgan has already deployed AI since 2023 (AFAIK)

and

audit in big4 is already fully software based since Covid, so no surprises there!

that is the point, AI only created a trade-off for you!

your dilemma is a win for AI

if you dont use AI: you loose and not win at all ever again
if you use: you now equate yourself with a beginner!

thats why, AI will destory humanity

I wouldn't say destroy humanity, as it's a strong term, but it's definitely a replacement (economic displacement). We could face an era of underemployment or even unemployment, and governments will have to find a solution to this in the next 10 years.

I could be wrong and going to extremes on this, but eventually, a college degree might not be for everyone; the time and money invested might not yield a favorable payout [time + money = payout].

risk and reward, runs on instinct, if you kill instinct, you kill the predator

there is plenty of talk that college degrees will not be necessary anymore.

“In certain professions, a degree is no longer the guaranteed ticket to a job,” Schreiner told ClearanceJobs. “While AI might be more important in certain professions than others, one doesn’t need a crystal ball to understand that newly minted graduates might need to consider augmenting their content learning with AI skills.”

Amateur mathematicians solve long-standing maths problems with AI

Professional mathematicians have been stunned by the progress amateurs have made in solving long-standing problems with the assistance of AI tools, and say it could lead to a new way of doing mathematics

Amateur mathematicians are using artificial intelligence chatbots to solve long-standing problems, in a move that has taken professionals by surprise. While the problems in question aren’t the most advanced in the mathematical canon, the success of AI models in tackling them shows that their mathematical performance has passed a significant threshold, say researchers, and could fundamentally change the way we do mathematics.

The questions being solved by AI originate from Hungarian mathematician Paul Erdős, who was famous for his ability to pose useful but difficult questions during a career that spanned over six decades. “The questions tended to be very simple, but very hard,” says Thomas Bloom at the University of Manchester, UK.

How many kisses can one sphere receive?

First studied by Isaac Newton in 1694, the Kissing Number Problem asks how many non-overlapping spheres can touch a central one.

A joint team led by Peking University introduces PackingStar, a reinforcement learning system that advances long-standing results and sets new records in dimensions 25–31.

Finding Kissing Numbers with Game-theoretic Reinforcement Learning

Since Isaac Newton first studied the Kissing Number Problem in 1694, determining the maximal number of non-overlapping spheres around a central sphere has remained a fundamental challenge. This problem is the local analogue of Hilbert's 18th problem, bridging geometry, number theory, and information theory.

Although significant progress has been made through lattices and codes, the irregularities of high-dimensional geometry, dimensional structure variability, and combinatorial explosion beyond Go limit the scalability and generality of existing methods.

Here we model the problem as a two-player matrix completion game and train the reinforcement learning system, PackingStar, to play the games.

The matrix entries represent pairwise cosines of sphere center vectors. One player fills entries while another corrects suboptimal ones to improve exploration quality, cooperatively maximizing the matrix size, corresponding to the kissing number.

These matrices are decomposed into representative substructures, providing diverse bases and structural constraints that steer subsequent games and make extremely large spaces tractable.

PackingStar surpasses records from dimensions 25 to 31 and sets new lower bounds for generalized kissing numbers under various angular constraints. It achieves the first breakthrough beyond rational structures from 1971 in 13 dimensions and discovers over 6000 new structures in other dimensions. Notably, some configurations challenge long-held antipodal paradigms, revealing algebraic correspondences with finite simple groups as well as geometric relationships across dimensions.

Inspired by these patterns, humans devised further improved constructions. These results demonstrate AI's power to explore high-dimensional spaces beyond human intuition via extreme-scale reinforcement learning and open new pathways for the Kissing Number Problem and broader geometry research.

A Chinese research team has fully proved the 3D Ghys conjecture, a world-class mathematical problem that had baffled the international mathematics community for more than 30 years. It is the first time Chinese scientists have relied on a domestically developed large AI model to crack a problem at this level.

The team, led by Xu Disheng, a professor at the Greater Bay University and a visiting scholar at the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (Shanghai AI Lab), worked with the lab's Intern-S2 science large model to solve the conjecture. The AI took on large-scale, long-chain and highly complex mathematical derivations, while the researchers steered the overall direction and screened out promising lines of reasoning.

After multiple rounds of iterative interaction, the collaboration produced a complete and rigorous proof of the conjecture.

Independent verification was carried out by a Peking University team led by Liu Ruochuan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Professor Dong Bin. Using a self-developed framework and massive parallel computing with AI agents, the team completed formal machine verification of all core theorems and generated hundreds of thousands of lines of verification code, rigorously confirming that the entire proof is logically complete, gap-free and fully valid.

First proposed in 1995 by French mathematician Étienne Ghys, the conjecture has long stood as a central unsolved problem in complex dynamics, with extreme reasoning difficulty. Its real-number counterpart remains an open problem worldwide and is regarded as a key benchmark for measuring advanced mathematical reasoning ability.

The paper has been released on an international preprint platform, and the verification code has been fully open-sourced.

Wouldn't it be great to be unemployed in the coming era ? Fewer people working with Ai and robots , creating wealth for the unemployed... you have comfortable living and enough money to enjoy life to the fullest without taking any responsibility.
