NVIDIA discussion thread

Your Indian friends tell similar stories on this forum, but they got a reality check when Pakistani Chinese made fighter jets downed scores of Rafale fighters.

Everyone has a big mouth behind a keyboard, but when push comes to shove things look very different on the ground.

China isn't even buying NVIDIA AI chips because China has homegrown alternatives.
China has no alternative of Cuda. Cuda is godfather of AI that is why Nvidia is a 4 trillon dollar company.

It’s the Indians lol…..if you’re trying equate them with how the US Air Force would perform you have a big surprise coming.

China has smuggled huge amounts of NVIDIA chips through third party sources in East Asian countries. China doesn’t have AI chips as capable as Blackwell or Rubin nor do they have the yields TSMC produces.

US AI lead will only accelerate from here, as US vast investments in compute come online. For example, Colossus 2 is now operational. Stargate goes operational later this year etc.

It doesn't matter. China will do the necessary and build its own chip industry. Even if it bought tons of these NVIDIA chips they will use them to initially setup their AI industry as they gradually introduce domestic AI chips. Either way you look at it, China is a winner.

China can’t produce chips anywhere close to the capabilities of NVIDIA.

Rubin is now in production BTW
Do not underestimate the Chinese. They will get there. They started out with a great starter set thanks to Motorola with the fab at Tianjin.

US semiconductor abilities didn't just happen overnight. It took many years. And now, Intel struggles. Compare its current stock price with that of TI. It wasn't that long ago when the situation was reversed.

I remember when Nvidia was on Kepler era (gtx 680-780 ti) than all changed the landscape when Nvidia introduced Maxwell gtx 980 to gtx 980 ti and there share from usd 3 yes 3 skyrocked to 50 usd in just 2 days. However, i personally think Amd radeon a@@ whopped nvidia at time and introduced mental api that reduced bottleneck of cpu and ported pc games with much reduced drawcalls. Radeon gcn, rdna 1 2 and 3 are gem. I will personally personally buy rx 9070 xt tuf or Rog all day any day against rtx 5080. Rx 9070 XT is a goldmine for overclockers like me.
AMD has come a long ways. I've used AMD chips in some of my PCs; both CPUs and video cards.

It is not a matter of China or USA being ahead, or behind and how many percentages points something is "better". Better, changes over time.

It is that the Chinese are now reaching the point, where they don't need anything from the Americans anymore, and that is what the Americans needs to be worried about.

The Chinese are truly becoming independent from the USA for basically everything now.

The Chinese are therefore a viable alternative to the rest of the world away from the USA.

There is no alternative to the US. American tech companies are the OS of the modern world.

China is fast following US companies in almost every field. The US is at the frontier, China is nearly always in the rear view mirror. China is good at scaling, but the US is the clear leader in breakthrough innovation and setting the trend line for future technological and scientific growth.

That was the case with EVs/FSD, biotech/Covid vaccines, AI/ChatGPT breakthrough, now reusable rockets. All this in the last 5-10 years. An the US reaps the economic rewards. It’s why the US has seen a growth and productivity boom since Covid and why the US is running at 4-5% growth rates, and record high stock and tech company market caps.

US companies are leading the way, while China is the afterthought hoping to catch up.

This point "It is that the Chinese are now reaching the point, where they don't need anything from the Americans anymore, and that is what the Americans needs to be worried about" still stands.

The Chinese, despite the USA's best attempt at technology denial, won't need the USA anymore. Everything they need, is within their borders.

Except oil of course.

xAI’s Colossus 2 supercomputer is now operational and the first to bring a Gigawatt scale AI training cluster online

All to create hyper realistic porn...what's the end goal of all his compute power? There's a thing called law of diminishing returns. AI is close to hitting that if not already there. It hasn't solved any pressing ills of the world. It's impact is similar to going from a type writer to a word processer. None of my engineers use it and balk at all the rework they have to do fix the crap hyper inefficient code it produces.

The point is irrelevant. The US produces the frontier research and tech breakthroughs. The US therefore has first mover advantage and sets trend lines and reaps the economic benefits. I could care less if the Chinese want to use an inferior homemade AI chip. The American tech ecosystem is the OS of the modern world.

China is a dying nation, literally. Their demographic outlook is as bad as you’ll ever see. Losing 500-600 million workers over the next 75 years is a recipe for terminal economic decline. America is the future and always has been.

The US is currently ranked 11th in the world in proven oil reserves. The Chinese are 13th.

Currently, it is cheaper for China to purchase oil than produce their own.

75 years is a long time for a nation of 1.4+B people. The Chinese are making incredible advances in robotics. Even my own company is looking to China in addition to other suppliers for robotics for our various distribution centers.

I would caution you to ease up on the decline of China. Yes, the US is still a leader in innovation. Yet, like the Japanese before them, the Chinese have come a long way from the days of making cheap copies of US made products to being leaders in their own right.

China is like Apple of any given field, they might be slow to the market but when they come they simply roll over the competition

There is something seriously wrong with the power demand of the cities that they have compared with........there is no chance that a city as big and power hungry as San Francisco has power demand of just 1500MW. They are either confusing or making grave errors.

I can say this because i know with 100% certainty that peak power demand of Karachi in summers is around 3600-4000MW with around 500-600 being load shed due to thefts.....and peak winter demand of karachi is around 1400MW.

For further comparison, Dubai has peak summer demand of around 14000MW.
