  • The U.S. tops the world in international tourism receipts, earning $215B in 2024 alone.
  • United Arab Emirates stands out, generating $45.5B, a number that rivals Europe’s tourism powerhouses.

Each year, the global tourism economy generates trillions in revenue as travelers explore new destinations and revisit old favorites. According to UN Tourism data, international tourist receipts reached a total of $1.74 trillion in 2024, which is up 14% from pre-pandemic levels in 2019.

Visual creator Iswardi Ishak mapped the countries that benefit most from this spending, revealing which economies gain the most from foreign visitors.
 
A lot of these countries actually run tourism deficits (when residents spend more on tourism abroad than their home countries receive by foreign tourists).
 
Chinese people love to travel around the world, and many westerners still hold that stereotype that Chinese population are brainwashed by their government and know nothing about what's going on outside China:p

I am surprised by low Chinese numbers. It has amazing potential. India ofcourse is filthy, with poor tourist infra and lack of civic sense in general. China can easily reach 100 billion USD (not sure why it is not) and perhaps India can too if gets its s..t right. 50 billion for frozen tundra Canada?!

What would be the PPP value of Indian tourists visiting overseas?🕳️
it would confirm more a "Purchasing Power" of developing countries like India in their own currency, to pay/ generate indirect taxes for shops/businesses of these tourist destinations, the domestic/international both 👍

Like I said, every data in the world and using bare logic says completely different. China gets 10x more tourists than India yet spending overall is equal? Yeah we will go with international tourists numbers (hard proven data) and india is not on the list while china is top 3.
