US Political News and Trump’s China visit

Was he breaking any laws? If not, why the excessive use of force - where are the de-escalation tactics. This is not the US I aspired to live in - there is a reason why I left India.

ICE is not trained at all. In fact, most of the law enforcement in USA has very little training to deal with such situations. Add to that the pressure being put on them (metrics), plus an open market of guns (pretty much). Situations like this unfortunately won't be the last one.

Worry not. This is just the domestic aspect of Cheetoman's desperations manifesting themselves. Much will happen over the next three years, but it will all work out got the better, beginning later this year.

As to what's becoming of this country, I do agree, and I don't really want to live here longer anymore. It is in general becoming a mass psychosis.

LOL. Things will work out just fine, O ye of little faith! :D

Cheetoman? Who? Trump?
What is happening later this year? The midterm elections?

Yes, excessive force was used but to hide behind the 'technicality' of carrying a gun in such a violent situation was unwise, to say the least, especially after what happened to Renee Good just few days ago.
I think the ICE agents are jittery, ill trained, and probably feel they can get away, literally, with murder because the POTUS himself feels like that and provides the 'cover' for the agents. It is a shameful America but still Mr. Alex Pretti should not have carried a gun--which, even though removed from him, contributed to his death.

PS. As to what's becoming of this country, I do agree, and I don't really want to live here longer anymore. It is in general becoming a mass psychosis.

I have seen somehwat similar arguments being made in India - arey ladki itni raat ko akeli kyun nikli, nahi nikalna chahiye tha. Boss why did you take panga with police, you know how it is.. yada yada yada

Point being, law doesn't have the "feelings" part - there is no technicality here, its perfectly legal to carry a gun and he had a license. Rest is all "white-washing"

If democrats eff about and are not able to make significant gains then it will be a disaster - FFS if USA goes down, other countries will too (sort of a domino effect). I am seeing it in India which is much more divided now than pre-2014 without a doubt. I have faith in both USA and India that there will be course correction - rest as they say will be "history"

‘Not a cheap piece of crap’: Gun reportedly carried by Alex Pretti is widely popular among enthusiasts

The customized firearm appeared to be a version of the Sig Sauer P320, a 9mm pistol carried by law enforcement and U.S. military members.

Alex Jeffrey Pretti, the 37-year-old fatally shot by a Border Patrol agent on Jan. 24, was allegedly carrying a Sig Sauer 9mm pistol that is widely popular and frequently carried by U.S. military and law enforcement.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shared photographs of the gun with its slide retracted and sitting on the seat of a vehicle. Beside it is an ejectable magazine loaded with bullets.

Authorities said the gun and ammo was on Pretti’s person during a fatal confrontation with agents.

The shooting is the third involving federal agents since the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown in Minnesota expanded earlier this month.

Trump administration officials cast Pretti’s possession of the firearm as evidence that he had violent intentions. State and local officials quickly condemned the shooting, including some gun-rights supporters.

People with knowledge of firearms said the model is a Sig Sauer P320 with several customized features, indicative of an enthusiast. Mounted on the handgun is a detachable sight. It has a custom flat trigger and grip. Printed on the gun is “Sig Custom Works,” the insignia of the New Hampshire-based gun manufacturer’s bespoke line.

Pistols with such custom modifications are widely available to the general public. In Minnesota, handgun owners are required to obtain a permit for concealed carry. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said Pretti was legally permitted to carry a weapon.

Based on the photograph of the gun, Joshua Harrison, a firearms expert based in Huntington Beach, Calif., said the model appeared to be a P320 AXG Combat.

Harrison noted the threaded barrel of the gun. He said this design allows for attachments such as a suppressor or a compensator, used to dampen sound or help with accuracy, respectively. Harrison said the pistol is the type one might find on the gun range.

“This is not a cheap piece of crap,” Harrison said.

Rob Doar, president of Minnesota’s Gun Owners Law Center, said the P320 is well-liked in the state and typically runs about $1,300. Upgrades like the optic are less common, he said.

In 2023, GunBroker.com ranked the P320 model as the second-bestselling handgun in the U.S., after Sig Sauer’s P365. That is the same year Sig Sauer, the top pistol maker since 2018, produced more than 944,562 pistols, accounting for 94% of its total production, according to the trade publication.

Sig Sauer’s ascent tracked with the adoption by the U.S. military. Since 2018 the P320 has been the standard issue sidearm under a contract with the gunmaker to replace the M9/11 Beretta.

Federal agents, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), also carry P320s, as do many state and local law enforcement officers.

Apparently the guy showed up at an ICE raid carrying a gun

private ownership of guns should be banned in USA. People just cannot be trusted.

No, the 'technicality' matters. It was unwise for the guy to go with a gun in such potentially violent situation.

If democrats eff about and are not able to make significant gains then it will be a disaster - FFS if USA goes down, other countries will too (sort of a domino effect). Democrats will have to win with a large majority and even then, looking at the erosion of the power of the US Congress, I have low hopes. Trump is the Emperor and short of his boast about shooting anyone on the 5th Avenue, he does as he pleases.

@j_hungary your comments on this recent shooting?
Don't know much about this, only a few camera angles.

At this point, this is a questionable shooting, not straight up legal or illegal. Yes, he was armed, but 2nd Amendment said we can be armed. It's totally legal to open carry a firearm during a protest (read Kyle Rittenhouse in Kenosha Protest), so it would really depend on the last interaction before the shooting, if Pretti had been aggressive or raised his weapon at the agent. Only if Pretti escalated, the agent cannot just say he is armed and shoot him.

I am not aware of any video showing the last moment before he got shot, so I cannot comment on it.

Edit, saw 1 video allegedly happened when he got shot, there was an agent in a grey coat, he didn't go in with a firearm, and he came out in the struggle with one and back away BEFORE the gunshot was heard. Can't see what type or even color of the firearms but it was with a reflex sight, which Federal Agents don't usually carry with their sidearm.

If this is Pretti's Firearms, then the agents would have a lot of explaining to do for me to lean on a good shoot.

This is part of Trump/MAGA Level 1 anti immigration strategy, for matters and perceptions to deteriorate to the extent that many immigrants will give up and leave themselves. But us immigrants are made of tougher material than that!

Kinda tragic given the total amount of taxes we generally contribute in 10 years or so are more than 95% MAGA supporters will ever pay. And we do that without taking any benefits or having voting right etc. Plus plenty of us start companies employing US citizens and furthering technological progress

FWIW, spending time in US has been worth it one way or another - save enough, get FIRE in India at least and rest is gravy...

ICE ices another? Too much second amendment in America, god bless them.
