USA Weather Alert and Warnings Thread

Its insane how cold can be so brutal, can't imagine how people operate in that, here at 36F I don't want to leave house to do anything.

You and I are both Karachiite. If I am managing 5-15 F lows every winter, so would you! I can't imagine living in Tampa or just about anywhere in FL with its perennial heat. It is like a warm, wet blanket over you 9-10 months a year!
Besides, as VCheng said, 'oodles' of character to be built in cold climes! So Hint, Hint ;)

Yeah I may but long lasting winters can be troublesome as it makes day to day tasks hard to do, I can survive in heat very well as I grow up in Karachi, plus here in USA electric bill is not crazy even if i keep the AC on for most part of the day, car has AC and so does AC, so you can barely feel the heat if you stay inside, but if you have to go to Walmart for a quick run you can without much effort unless you have to shovel 2-3inches of snow to clear your driveway.
I would move to Greenville SC if I have a chance with a job, no doubt. But I am starting to like Florida for it offers given its rising economy, and beautiful beaches, springs and so much to offer. Its just too expensive and hurricanes is a big issue, if you live in a floodzone that's a game over and given how Insurances companies screw you over royally, one has to be extra careful when buying a house to hunker down permanently. Hence my house search is around areas like Lakeland, Zephyrhills, Wesley chaples etc. Another good factor is that access of Halal food/mosques which makes this area very attractive.

Here are the pics from my semi-ordeal. Wife and I were kind of excited to get some cold white stuff falling on us. I didn't even bother to bring the brand new gas powered generator out of the shed to the house. I thought, meh, just a hype. We will have the power and will be fine. So basically with limited firewood, we would enjoy a romantic fireside time if the power really went out. As you can see, along with real firewood, we also had a few fire logs--kind of cheating.

But not only the firelogs were old but we had thick round firewood which just refused to burn for a long time. Some one said later to have the firewood chipped--and not thick log. So the fire in the fireplace became a struggle to keep it warm as the temp dropped outside--and of course no power. We started to exhaust the firewood and the firelogs and, as I said, finally early morning hours gave up and snuggled under the warm blanket in bedroom.

But I did use my Jackery 1000 power bank to reheat a few slices of pizza for the supper in the evening; it drained 10% in a mere few minutes. Never again!

The next morning was cold but sunny and the icicles were like glistening chandeliers all around the house. Beautiful!!

The city of Pittsburgh declared a state of emergency today after 37 of its snowplows broke down overnight, Mayor Corey O'Connor said.

The nonworking equipment represents a large share of the city's 95-snowplow fleet, and the emergency status will allow it to hire contractors with their own vehicles to pitch in, O'Connor said at a news conference.

The city's maintenance garage is working around the clock to get at least some of those trucks back up and running, he said.
Pittsburgh rarely receives the snowfall that Erie gets. Sounds like they are having a tough go of it.

A rare time I wished I were in FL right now! But can't leave this challenging homestead to the elements and thus I am starting to regret building a wonderfully peaceful but also a woefully challenging house where it is located.
This is where you are learning very quickly what needs to be done for the future. Trust me, you won't repeat this year's mistakes again.

One thing I noticed about the power outages: Only those unfortunate like me and our street and others with less congestion suffered the long power outage. I checked with several friends in the area and saw the pattern: The more congested, the less power outage. Maybe because people like me are some 'low priority' and/or too many trees compared with people in our area. And while I understand that, I am not happy about the circumstances!!
PS. Thanks to all above for the firewood tips. I am learning from this experience but as soon as I am able to, I'd like to invest in a backup system like Generac. I don't foresee myself chopping wood a lot although there is virtually unlimited amount of potential firewood on my property from fallen trees and branches. I am too lazy for hard yard work!

Heard that in upstate NY, you get entire lakes/streams/creeks get frozen and sometimes it more cooler than Alaska? Is it true?
I'll add to this. During one of my trips to ORD, happened to notice the weather for ANC. My oldest daughter lives there. When it was 0F in ORD, it was 35F in ANC. The benefit of the warm currents coming into the bay.

At the moment, it is 23F here and clear skies. Forecast calls for temps in the mi-50s by mid-afternoon.

This year's mistakes were downplaying the threat of the ice storm to bring the power outage and not ready with the generator and not enough firewood. Those mistakes I need to never repeat!

But long term, yes, the property is very challenging due to where it is built. We can get natural gas if had built at the street but can't now. Heck, our waterline is 800 ft long and can break--and has broken mid way--before. Even right now, we can't drive to the street from the house because the long driveway is hard frozen!! Means, we can't even go to some stores to get some fire logs or whatever until things thaw!

Right, same difference between Juneau, Alaska and Chicago.
Honestly, Chicago sounds like just sucks! Too warm in summer and too cold in winter!

For fun, when it is below zero, we can throw up a cup of water up in the air and have it fall back down as frozen drops (makes for great photos BTW). I suppose that is our equivalent of people frying eggs on pavement down south. :D
