Only purpose was to get respect for Bangladesh, says PCB chief Naqvi after talks with ICC

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi on Tuesday said in the context of his recent engagements with Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and International Cricket Council (ICC) officials that the purpose was to “get respect for Bangladesh”.

Naqvi said this while speaking to the media in Peshawar, a day after the government announced it was withdrawing its decision to boycott the group-stage match against India in the T20 World Cup, scheduled for February 15.

The development followed protracted negotiations between the ICC, the cricket boards of Pakistan and Bangladesh, consultations among national leaders and interventions by friendly nations such as Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates.

The now-withdrawn decision to boycott the match against arch-rival India was announced by the government on February 1 after Bangladesh were replaced by Scotland in the tournament, following their refusal to tour India over safety concerns in the wake of soured political relations between the Asian neighbours.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Saturday expressed its desire to strengthen economic and constructive ties with Pakistan, while conveying its gratitude to President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for their congratulatory messages following the party’s election victory.

On X account, the BNP said, “Bangladesh and Pakistan share a history that has seen both challenges and cooperation, yet our peoples have continued to value dialogue, respect, and regional engagement. We remain hopeful that, in the years ahead, our two countries will further strengthen constructive ties, expand economic and people-to-people connections, and work together for a more peaceful and prosperous South Asia.”

The BNP also said that Bangladesh acknowledges the recent positive momentum in the bilateral engagements and remains open to fostering a forward-looking relationship with Pakistan based on mutual respect, sovereign equality, and constructive dialogue.

“We look forward to exploring avenues of practical cooperation that contribute to regional peace, stability, and shared progress in South Asia,” it added.

President Zardari had extended his felicitations to Tarique Rahman on BNP’s landslide victory and congratulated the people of Bangladesh on their successful, peaceful polls.

I welcome cordial relations with Pakistan.

But you will not be able to use Bangladesh to needle India.

And given Pakistan’s economy is significantly smaller (thanks to the great leadership of Hasina) - Pakistan can only be a minor player on the economic front. On par with Sri Lanka. But less than Nepal and Bhutan.
