Chinese Submarines News & Discussions

so in terms of nuclear submarines we have

Type 091 SSN Pennant 401-405 thats 5 units
Type 092 SSBN Pennant 406 thats 1 unit
Type 093 SSN Pennant 407 and 408 thats 2 units
Type 093A SSN Pennant 409 and 410 and 418 and 419 thats 4 units
Type 093B Pennant 7-8 Hulls with 16 planned ?
Type 094/A SSBN Pennant 411-414 and 410 and 421 thats 6 units
Type 095 SSN Pennat XX 1 units

so total SSN = 12 +7-8 Type 093B with 16 planned?
so total SSBN= 7

China has built close to 25+ SSN/SSBN

Major Upgrade Sees Hypersonic Ship-Killer Missiles Aboard China’s AIP Submarines

China’s large fleet of air-independent propulsion (AIP) submarines is set to become significantly more lethal. The introduction of the next-generation YJ-19 hypersonic missile dramatically elevates their already serious anti-ship punch. China is currently the only nation known to have armed non-nuclear submarines with hypersonic strike weapons.

Chinese state media has shared a report from the Chinese Navy (PLAN) that the YJ-19 hypersonic missile has been accepted for service aboard the country’s Type-039B Yuan-class diesel-electric submarines. The low-key announcement is a sign of China’s unrelenting rapid growth in naval power.

This gives the submarines new capabilities, making the Yuan-class the only non-nuclear submarines in the world with such a weapon. Hypersonic anti-ship missiles are designed specifically to stretch and overcome even the most capable current defences aboard warships. They will elevate China’s Yuan-class to being the most formidably armed non-nuclear submarines afloat.

YJ-19 Scramjet Missile

The YJ-19 missile was first revealed in public during the September 2025 military parade in Beijing. An air-breathing missile, it has the hallmarks of a hypersonic weapon. It likely employs a scramjet motor for sustained hypersonic flight. Some estimates suggest that it is near-hypersonic, while the main (and Chinese) label is hypersonic, suggesting speeds of Mach 5 or more.

The Type-039B Yuan-class is the mainstay of the Chinese conventional submarine fleet with 13 believed to be in service. It has air independent power (AIP) meaning that it can cruise for days or weeks at low speeds without coming to the surface, a significant aid to remaining undetected. They are complemented by the older Type-039A version, and the newer stealthily shaped Type-039C which is still in production. It seems likely that eventually all Type-039Bs and Type-039Cs will be equipped with the new hypersonic missile.

In Chinese submarine service the YJ-19 missile can be seen as a replacement for the already formidable YJ-18 missile. That weapon is a Chinese copy of the Russian SS-N-27 Sizzler and features a supersonic final attack stage. In essence it is a Kalibr cruise missile carrying a smaller supersonic final stage which approaches its target at 2.5 – 3 times the speed of sound (Mach 2.5 – 3.0). The YJ-18 is considered a serious stretch of warship air defences, but the hypersonic (Mach 5+) YJ-19 will take this to another level.

YJ-19: Advantage Over The Russian Zircon Missile

The YJ-19 missile is analogous with Russia’s 3M22 Zircon (NATO reporting designation SS-N-33). Compared to the Zircon it appears, based on the Chinese ‘YJ’ designation (‘Yingji’ meaning ‘Eagle Strike’), to dedicated to the anti-ship role. Although also considered an anti-ship missile, Zircon has been used in Russia’s war against Ukraine to strike land targets. A Chinese land-attack missile would ordinarily have a CJ (‘Cháng Jiàn’ for ‘Long Sword’) designation. This does not rule out its use against land targets however but does show the doctrinal emphasis.

The major advantage of the YJ-19 over the Zircon is that it can be launched from horizontal torpedo tubes. This means that older boats can be upgraded to carry them. The Zircon is also being carried aboard Russian submarines, but only those equipped with appropriate vertical launch tubes. This rules out its carriage on Russia’s ubiquitous Kilo-class diesel-electric submarines.

China’s Growing Arsenal Of Hypersonic Missiles

The YJ-19 is joined by another new hypersonic anti-ship missile, the slightly larger YJ-17. There are clear indications that the former is for launch out of standard 533mm (21 inch) torpedo tubes, and the latter from vertical launch tubes. Another difference is that while the YJ-19 uses an air-breathing scramjet, the YJ-19 is a glide-vehicle type, suggesting only diving attacks. We can infer that the YJ-19 will have a shorter operational range than its VLS launched brother. However, it remains a serious threat to even the most modern warships.

Just last week China launched the first of its next-generation nuclear-powered submarines, the Type-095 (more properly the Type-09V with a Roman numeral for ‘5’). It is possible that that too could carry the YJ-19 missile, but it seems more likely that it instead has vertical launch types for either the YJ-17, or yet another hypersonic anti-ship missile, the YJ-20. The latter, often referred to as the YJ-21, is a manoeuvring ballistic missile type which is already in service aboard the Type-055 Renhai-class cruisers. The country’s next-generation Type-041 Zhou-class ‘nuclear-AIP’ submarine is however a stronger candidate for the YJ-19 missile.

Outlook

China now fields at least three ship or submarine launched hypersonic anti-ship missiles, the YJ-17, YJ-19 and YJ-20. So many new weapons that the list of designations quickly become confusing even to naval observers.

Their ability to retrofit its large fleet of conventional submarines with the YJ-19 type will greatly increase both the individual submarine’s potency, but also the fleet at large. China’s fleet of conventional submarines won’t only be the most powerfully armed in the anti-ship role, they will also be the most numerous.

China is building submarines faster than ever, think tank says. Why that’s a problem for Washington

China has ramped up its production of nuclear-powered submarines over the past five years to the point where it is launching subs faster than the United States, threatening to negate a sea-power advantage that has long belonged to Washington, a new think tank report says.

The buildup in the People’s Liberation Army Navy’s nuclear-powered sub force includes both ballistic-missile and attack subs, the report from the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) says.

During the years 2021 to 2025, China’s submarine building surpassed that of the US in both numbers of subs launched – 10 to 7 – and tonnage – 79,000 to 55,500, says the report, which looked at shipyard satellite imagery to draw estimates of China’s construction.

Beijing does not disclose fleet numbers.

It’s a stark turnaround from the 2016 to 2020 period, when China only added three subs (23,000 tons) to the US Navy’s seven (55,500 tons), according to the IISS analysis.

The numbers represent subs launched but not necessarily completed and added to the active-duty fleet, where the US still maintains a large advantage.

As of early 2025, China had 12 active nuclear-powered submarines, six ballistic-missile boats and six guided-missile or attack boats, according to the IISS’ “Military Balance 2025.” The US had 65 total subs, with 14 of those being ballistic-missile boats.

China also maintains a large conventionally powered sub fleet, with 46 boats, according to the “Military Balance.”

The US has zero conventionally powered subs which – unlike nuclear-powered subs – need to refuel regularly.

To accommodate its nuclear-powered sub fleet growth, Beijing has significantly expanded the Huludao yard of Bohai Shipbuilding Heavy Industry Co. in northern China, according to the report, headlined “Boomtime at Bohai.”

It comes after a Congressional Research Service report to Congress last month said the US Navy is falling well behind its submarine-building goal of two Virginia-class attack boats per year, with US shipyards delivering only 1.1 to 1.2 subs a year since 2022.

The US is also building new Columbia-class ballistic-missile submarines, but that program is at least a year behind schedule, with first-in-the-class USS District of Columbia not expected to be delivered to the Navy until 2028, the admiral in charge of the program told Breaking Defense last week.

“The greater numbers in the water present a growing challenge to (the US and other Western) countries as they struggle to increase their own output,” the IISS report says.

The IISS report highlights two Type 094 ballistic-missile subs (SSBNs) that have been launched at the Huludao shipyard. With the ability to fire nuclear-armed ballistic missiles, the Type 094s add to Beijing’s growing nuclear triad of land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles and bombers, it says.

And China has even better SSBNs in the works, the IISS says.

“The Type-096, is still expected to begin production at Bohai this decade, entering service either in the late 2020s or early 2030s,” it says.

Besides the SSBNs, the PLA Navy’s nuclear-powered launch numbers for the past five years include at least six guided-missile sub (SSGN) hulls, the report says. These boats have the vertical launch system (VLS), which could be used to fire new high-speed anti-ship missiles displayed at China’s Victory Day parade in Beijing last fall.

But the IISS report isn’t all bad news for Washington and its allies.

“Chinese designs almost certainly lag behind US and European boats in terms of quality,” the report says.

The newest Chinese subs are not believed to be as quiet as US ones, leaving the stealth advantage to the US Navy.

Still, experts say, in naval combat, the larger force usually prevails. And China already possesses the world’s-largest fleet of destroyers, frigates and surface combatants.

Meanwhile, Washington has struggled to keep up.

Navy Secretary John Phelan last summer told a US House of Representatives hearing that US naval construction was in dire straits.

“All of our programs are a mess,” Phelan said.

“I think our best one is six months late and 57% over budget … That is the best one,” he testified.

When it comes to submarine numbers over the next five years, the Congressional Research Service (CRS) report says US attack sub numbers are expected to hit the “bottom of the valley” to 47 in 2030, as aging Los Angeles-class attack boats are retired.

An increase to 50 attack subs is not expected until 2032 – if construction goals are reached – the report says. But it notes that plans to sell three to five Virginia-class subs to Australia as part of the AUKUS deal could hamper plans to increase the US fleet in the short term.

The upcoming sub force “valley” was first noted in 1995, the CRS report says, adding, it “could lead to a period of heightened operational strain for the SSN force, and perhaps a period of weakened conventional deterrence against potential adversaries such as China.”

How far behind are we in sub technology compared to Americans?

With type 095 and 096, they should be very close technologically to US nuke subs I think. But, the biggest difference is scale of nuke subs, US now has over 60 and China has total of a dozen, some latest reports say about 30 though, don't know for sure, but advanced type 095 and 096 are just getting started.

Ah thanks for the info. Yeah we can't challenge US navy yet which is why Taiwan remains a thorny issue. But we should keep developing under the radar and see how that goes.

China can take on the US right now, but with a madman in charge, the global nuclear war can become quite loose.

By judging their recent behavior, they are quite keen to take the rest of world with them if they lose the competition against China.

Most people are not realizing how dangerous this world has become with an unhinged US and China is not acting as a challenger, but a stabilizer.

Exactly and there is no reason to risk it all when in 40 yrs time everything can be owned without even a fight

what is this based off of? any data/fact to back this up?

China believes it can win the competition against the US near 100%, and it has no motivation to wreck the world.

The US is starting realizing that they are going to lose the competition, and they are desperately trying to prevent China from winning even at the cost to ruin the entire world.

If China can prevent the US from wrecking the entire world, then it gonna win everything, and bringing Earth to a next level of prosperity.

US is just a little crazy under trump right now but I think they will die a slow death once trump is out of office. What will help that is the recent decoupling with Europe who traditionally buys most of usa debt with everyone including Europeans not using us dollars or buying us debt, the usa collapse is all that more imminent as inflation soars and de dollarisation continues

The US has basically been screwed beyond reparation, and the whole nation has to rebuild from scratch.

And China is preventing them to destroy the world because of desperation.

China won't put its bet on any other nation, but it is doing its best to save the world.

That's why having the Type 095 and Type 096 might not be suffice, and we need to have the most powerful anti-missile defense that can simultaneously neutralize all nuclear missiles in the world.

The best option is to win the competition against the US without a war.

The second best option is to save the world from the US nuclear extortion.
