Since 1950s, this has been the norm. Every time Afghans have started a punga with Pakistan, a punishment has been meted out to them leading to Afghans licking their wounds and retreating. The problem is that these border conflagrations don't solve anything. Perhaps it will allow some venting for the Pakistan side to target and obliterate some of the Taliban bastards and their infrastructure, but they will go back to their covert program.

My father fought in the Bajaur conflict. The reality of the Afghans on the other side was absolutely rag-tag militia who used to try to raid Pakistani positions through harassing fire and would get decimated in the process because of our artillery fire. Their motivation to attack Pakistani troops was equally stone-age. The captured ones (wearing torn-up Shalwar Kameez, bare foot/sandals) would tell our officers that they were told by their leaders that Pakistani "daal khorrs" were cowards and would run leaving all their equipment behind.
