The US never achieved air superiority over North Vietnam, never decimated decisively North Vietnam air defense, Air Force, manufacturing capability in 10 years of war.

That was from the initial days of bombings---. The americans changed the tactics and strategy and brought down the losses. Realistically---the Viets felt the might of the US air power for the first time in reality thru all that conflict---.

After the first 24 hours---they began to understand the true might of the american behemoth---. After 72 hours---the viets were BEGGING the americans to stop---.

In 24 hours of the start of the operation linebacker 2----they were desperately trying to make the US come back to the peace table---.

Also this summer started Irán with sending oil vía railways trough Turkmenistán.

When you think of a Marine Expeditionary Unit in the context of this conflict, one target comes to mind: Kharg Island, where the majority of Iran’s oil exports flow. Untouched by the conflict yet, due to its strategic value and critical infrastructure. Seizing it would be a huge deal and would be a risky operation. Not just the seizing, but more so the staying. If Iran thought it was lost, they could bombard it with pretty much everything they have. Also, unlikely to push the MEU into the Persian Gulf. Would be an aerial operation, also not without risks.

There are also a number of islands in and around the Strait of Hormuz that could be used to help put up a screen against shipping attacks, etc. Also risky for obvious reasons.
