Its not about capacity but demonstration of capability by iranians thats off putting. I dont think us will risk putting such aircraft in Saudi anymore. They might push back tanker fleet all the way to jordan which is the big problem because that makes their job even harder and clutters airspace more making more collisions likely. Had this been any other force than usaf this wouldve been a major loss

It's my opinion, and my opinion only, that any such demonstration by Iran has been with the assistance mostly being the Russians. Some of the strikes have been too precise. The same applied with Ukraine. This is the Russian response to US assistance to Ukraine.

You are going to transport thousands of soldiers…..by helicopter(s)? Into manpad territory? You realize Iran makes thousands of manpads?

Assuming whatever helicopters make it safely and land, you are having those marines hold the island…whose infrastructure you just decimated…with nowhere to hide and 32 tanks of toxic fuel in storage tanks all around them? With IRGC 30KM away on the coastline?

Like I said, call of duty thinking. Iran will just shut off oil to Kharg and switch the flows to Jask and smaller terminals, daily MBPD might drop from 3MBPD to 1.5-2MBPD but during COVID and Operation Maximum Pressure iran was exporting less than 300,000 barrels.

Then Iran will retaliate not just on marines on the island but by hitting oil terminals in neighboring countries. And now you have oil at $200/barrel and global economic crisis.

Like I said, it’s an escalation trap. Iran is in an existential battle, the U.S. is not. Iran’s economy is already in shambles under decades of sanctions and Trump pressure tactics…and the west is not.

Iran has nothing to lose at this point. So Trump can escalate all he wants but he’s just causing more self inflicted wounds.

Taking Kharg would be a death trap for any marine. It’s a 10KM by 2KM island with very little places to hide.

Good luck with 5,000 troops trying to hold that.

You either try to clear the coastline first, starting from the Gulf of Oman and work your way to the island or put down the call of duty controller and talk realistically.

Iwo Jima is 8 square miles which is roughly the same size as Kharg Island. During the invasion, what was supposed to be a few day battle turned into a 5 week campaign. 21,000 Imperial Japanese troops, mostly hidden IN the island, managed to inflict 26,000 US casualties.

Kharg can provide Trump with "Hit and Quit" off-ramp he is looking for to escape the war US-Israel both have already lost but nothing beyond that. Its a terminal whose supply can be cut easily. The island can be barraged with heavy artillery, TBMs, MLRS and what not if enemy is sitting there in open sun doing what exactly.

You forget that Iran has surveillance satellites including some Russian built ones. Sure they are not <10cm 8K like US satellites but that’s overkill when you just need to see what assets positioned where on an airbase.

Add in ability to buy commercial satellites photos from Russians and Chinese and whatever spy satellite photos they are handing of, plus ability to use military grade links to GLONASS/BiDou and it’s not hard to figure out a reliable target bank. Iran has been watching U.S. assets around it since 2000.

The Russian news reel is just MSM trying to stroke tensions. They also claimed in the Ukraine war every 3 months that Iran were about to supply ballistic missiles to Russia. For 3years they ran this story numerous times and it never materialized. Not one Iranian tactical BM or HIMARS like rocket system went to Russia.

Not saying Russia and China aren’t helping Iran, they would be idiots to not. But the Russian help isn’t the difference maker IMO.
